Look, I hate Capitalism as much as the next comrade. I don’t believe the two-party system kind of gives a fuck about working-class people. At this point in my life, I’ve assumed the stance that the political arena is a massive jack-off fest complete with circus animals who caterwaul and raise their ass for the highest bidder. Joe Biden and Donald Trump equally suck, and neither is representative of the nacho-munching, Creed-loving populous we exist within. Politicians go into office with good intentions, and most of them come out as crooked thieves with bank accounts soaring with commas – just ..read more

Live music review: Madonna delivered a fiery show at Moody Center Sunday night
The Cosmic Clash
by April Dawne

Was it just a fever dream, an acid trip, or did my friends and I catch Madonna’s Celebration Tour Sunday night in Austin, Texas at the new Frank Erwin Center, aka the Moody Center? After what I experienced April 14, I’d say it might have been all of the above. Easy-breezy entry and off to our seats to get oriented and get situated. Friend one mentions how much fun she’s already having because of the excited energy in the venue and the decadently-dressed fans, while I’m thinking “why the fuck is it so hot in here?” We get into the bathroom line and I pull out my fan and start to notice all the ..read more

Live music review: Danny Brown threw down a rager at Empire Garage
The Cosmic Clash

Sometimes, live music crowds can be major downers. Austin, Texas’ vibrant music scene has a massive influx of live shows that draw a variety of different crowds, some good, some bad. For Detroit-turned-Austin oddball rapper Danny Brown, an unforgettable live spectacle made sure to cancel out the entitled personalities that attempted to harsh the triumphant vibes of Danny’s homecoming for yet another Austin appearance, this time at Empire Garage on Thursday, April 11. Danny Brown isn’t a young emcee. The Michigan native has been in the hip hop trenches for nearly two decades, and his career has ..read more

Live Music Review: The Bright Light Social Hour headlined stellar Scoot Inn performance last Saturday
The Cosmic Clash
by Amanda Quraishi

The Bright Light Social Hour may very well be the hardest working band in Austin. Last fall saw the kickoff of their North American Emergency Leisure tour following the late-summer release of their LP by the same name. The band took a break at the beginning of 2024 so lead guitarist Curtis Roush could tour Europe with Israel Nash, while other members worked on their own respective projects – notably Jackie O’Brien’s STARFLAKE and Juan Alfredo Rios’ regular gig with the nuevo cumbia all-stars, Como Las Movies.  The band played Austin for a few SXSW-adjacent shows this spring and now they’r ..read more

Holy Wire has released their new single “Lost,” out this week on all streaming services. The single, accompanied by two music videos, one lyric and one visual, showcases the unique blend of influences that define the Austin electro pop act. Frontman Alain Paradis’ inspired prowess for post punk, infused with synth and moody vocal deliveries, draws from the New York City rock and roll revival and the eclectic nature of the Austin music scene, creating a musical utopia that is both familiar and refreshingly new.  Since moving to Austin from New York, Paradis has made himself comfortable in ..read more

For South By Southwest 2024, The Black Keys premiered their triumphant story of rock and roll stardom, which didn’t come as an immediate success as their long tenure as a band might suggest. In the premiering This Is A Film About The Black Keys, we get to see their rise as a band, along with the friends they met and the legends they crossed paths with along the way, allowing for all the laughs, pitfalls, and eventual success of being famous rock stars in the present. Akron, Ohio’s The Black Keys have had a career built on stripped-down rock and roll, but the duo has made more of an impact than ..read more
