Bed Head

Did you know your hair has memory? It's funny how critical we can all be on ourselves especially when we wake up in the morning. First thing we do is look at ourselves in the mirror and see that our hair is all over the place and we have a serious case of bed head. Only excuse we can give our hair is that we do toss and turn, and the hair has been disturbed. So of course, our hair won't look as amazing as the day before. It doesn't mean you need a haircut, and it doesn't mean that you're using the wrong product, it just means you hair hasn't woken up. Yep, your hair is still being lazy. Hair h ..read more

Ok, let’s talk about healthy scalp and healthy hair struggles because we all know that the struggle is definitely real. We are all aware that normal hair loss occurs daily.  But did you know that the new hair that grows sleep for 3 months? Yep, they are snoozing before they make their grand entrance.  So it’s important that your scalp is clean and you’re being mindful of what you are putting on your scalp. The baby hair needs a clean scalp to thrive in.  Sounds like I’m talking about my garden but If you think about it, it’s so similar. You need good soil to make sure those flow ..read more

Stop Curl Shrinkage

Want to know how to stop your curly hair from shrinking so much? It is not so much about product(s), and more about how you do it. So we all know that heat affects the hair. If you put products in after your hair dries completely what that does is pull your hair down. If you put the diffuser on a blow dryer set on high and pull the hair down to stretch it while moving the dryer up and down, and up and down the hair -- what that does is to just relax it a little bit. That is one way to do it. The other way is to use a product like Cezanne™. It lasts anywhere from 3 to 6 months. There is somethi ..read more

Fall Color Changes

Did you know that caring for your curls in the fall is different than in the summertime? In summer your hair is much more exposed to the sun rays and the harshness of the sea salt from the beach or chlorine from the pool. Generally, those elements lighten the hair, and the ends are going to be a little tired so I would suggest that you start using leave-in conditioner. If you use Brocato Holdon styling gel, change it twice a year. In the winter time I like to add a little more conditioning. Also if you get your hair colored we should tone the color down too as we move into the fall and winter ..read more

Are some curly haircuts better than others for keeping my hair length? Yes, there is one style and I do not recommend it. That is a blunt cut where the upper layer, the longest hair, the top layer of the hair makes up the length. The blunt cut is the only way to wear your hair to keep the hair length that you would desire because it flattens, and weighs the hair down. So many people love long hair, but does long hair love you back like it should? Most of the time if I have a face that needs framing a shorter length is better. Remember shorter hair makes you look 10 pounds lighter, a couple of ..read more

Healthier Curls Secret

Curly cuts are magical! Do you know how many haircuts someone with curly hair should get each year? I recommend four haircuts each year. That corresponds to the four changes of season. You know that hairs live on the head for six months then they fall, and it goes into a dormant stage for three months, and another one comes up, so thank God there’s only 10 to 20% of our hair that’s dormant at a time otherwise we would be bald! This cycle of growth, dormancy and regrowth also depends on how old we are. Age in years affects how much faster hair grows back. Pregnancy can also affect hair growth ..read more

Easy Detangling
Curlyologist Blog

The first thing to do is - don't tangle it while shampooing it! Remember, you are not whipping cream. Wash gently and don't pile the hair up on your scalp. Start from the bottom ends with a “wet brush”, or “wide-toothed comb”. It is your hair so you can ease up when, or if, it becomes uncomfortable. Use your leave-in conditioner, or other styling product - that can help too. Tools for detangling include a “wet brush”, or a “wide-toothed comb”, and your fingers only ..read more
