HOBER stands for Home Barista Education Roadmap. Herein, we will be discussing what this roadmap is about, as well as why we decided to launch this programme! Since 2017, we have conducted many Barista Experience Workshops and Coffee-Brewing Workshops for clients and the general public. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many cafes were closed and people were also encouraged to work from home. Thus, many coffee addicts (like us) had to get our coffee fix elsewhere. This led to a boom in the number of home baristas, as many coffee drinkers took matters into their own hands and brewed their own cafe ..read more

From hearts, to tulips, to swans and unicorns, we have all seen Latte Art that would impress even your mother-in-law! With milk being such a large part of Latte Art, have you ever wondered whether different types of milk will affect it? Why Is The Milk You Choose In Latte Art Important? On 10 July 2018, TCR Academy welcomed a very special group of guests to attend our coffee workshops. They are none other than the brave warriors from Singapore Cancer Society – ENT Support Group. It was incredibly humbling and meaningful for the TCR team to create Amazing Coffee Experiences together with them. Our founder Swee Heng conducted a basic coffee appreciation segment for these participants, covering key topics such as Coffee Species and Coffee Belt. Perhaps the most interesting topic was the contrast between local kopi and specialty coffee! Founder’s Note: Conducting the workshop in ..read more

Cold Brew... but better!

Penned by Swee Heng I want to be upfront with you – I have not always been a fan of cold brews. I have dabbled in it before, chatted with friends in the coffee industry about it, and even exchanged recipes and pointers. But there’s a reason why Cold Brews never made it on the TCR Menu in the past – it just wasn’t great-tasting to me! I was so ready to shelve Cold Brew in the dark basement of my consciousness. But as the COVID-19 storm came (which basically destroyed the entire dine-in/customer service side of the café business), when we decided to move into Bottling of Handcrafted Drinks, a pa ..read more

The Milky Way (Cappuccino, Flat White & Cafe Latte)

If white coffee is what you prefer, welcome to the milky way! Another three drinks that can be found on almost every cafe menu are Latte, Flat White and Cappuccino. You might have your favourite out of the three, but do you know what sets them apart? The main difference is their respective proportions when it comes to milk foam and steamed milk content: While Flat Whites have a large amount of steam milk and the thinnest layer of milk foam out of the three, Cappuccinos have the largest layer of foam in comparison. Lattes find themselves somewhere in between the two. With such a great differen ..read more

Setting The Base For A Great Shot!

From the beans to the foundation of all specialty coffees, let’s start espress-ing our love for Espresso! What do you first think of when you think of espresso? Some of you might associate espressos with shots, bitterness, intensity or even a style of roasting, but that’s not exactly right. The term ‘Espresso’ refers to an intense, concentrated, black coffee that is produced by running pressurised water of at least 9 bars through finely ground coffee. That’s over four-times as much pressure as what you would find in a car tire! It is this intense pressure that gets you your espresso in a matt ..read more

Are you #TeamMatcha or #TeamHojicha?

With Matcha & Hojicha Latte now available at The Coffee Roaster Cafe @ NUS, you might be wondering... what are the differences between Matcha and Hojicha? Difference #1: Colour Matcha is bright green in colour (vibrant if it is ceremonial grade), whereas Hojicha is brown in colour. The tea bushes of Matcha leaves are grown in the shade, which increases the amount of chlorophyll content in the leaves- which gives Matcha its bright green colour. On the other hand, Hojicha is grown in the sun and is then roasted. Its brown hue is dependent on its harvest time, roasting time and type of leaf i ..read more
