A Bunch of Macros for Foundry VTT/Cairn/Block, Dodge, Parry

I made a bunch of macros to make Block, Dodge, Parry smoother to run in Foundry VTT v11. Note: I am not a very good programmer. I had ChatGPT write these for me, and tweaked them as needed. I am using the Macro Wheel extension by TheRipper93 for quick-and-smooth macro selection, and Token Magic for cool token effects. Paste these scripts into a new macro, and set them to ‘script’. Quick Damage Rolls These macros quickly roll damage for attacks. They do not take into account special weapon properties, but the non-d4 versions do ask if the attack should be Enhanced (also roll a d12). d4 // Chec ..read more

DIY Ancient Prophecies, Symbols & Lost Languages to Guide Your Campaign

This is a campaign hook I came up with centered around mystery, an ancient language, prophecy, and solving the puzzle of words from the past. Image: Spellbook by Fionn Hand Making The Scrypt The Prophecy Let’s start with an ancient prophecy: “When the Moon covers the Sun, Evil awakens. The Seals will be broken. Evil will lay ruin to the land. Four holy gemstones exist. Together, they can seal evil. One gemstone lays in a temple upon the highest peak. One gemstone lays in the city of the sea. One gemstone lays within the sunken lands. One gemstone lays in the guardian of the forest” This is ..read more

Time, Gear, Skill: Sneaking

OSR games tend to adjudicate sneaking and stealth as “just describe what you’re doing, and we’ll go from there”, which is a perfect valid approach in most cases. This is a version of sneaking that incorporates the Time, Gear, Skill philosophy as found in Block, Dodge, Parry and, oh wow, KNOCK #4! Image: Stealth Mission by KILART (Choe Heonhwa) To summarize the Time, Gear, Skill idea: If you have none or one, a task is impossible If you have all three, a task automatically succeeds If you only have two, a roll might be involved. ‘Time‘ means literally that; are you doing it in a hurry, or a ..read more

New (Year’s) Resolution Mechanic: Squeeze Your Skills
Dice Goblin Blog

Prismatic Wasteland posed a neat challenge to start the new year with: In January 2024, come up with a new resolution mechanic for a TTRPG and give it a name. So, here we go! Squeeze Your Skills I’ve always loved the simplicity and elegance of 24XX by Jason Tocci. I’m going to combine it with 2 other things I love: Usage Dice and the simple 3-stat array found in Into the Odd, Cairn and, heh of course, Block, Dodge, Parry. I’m dubbing it the Squeeze Your Skills mechanic, because it’s funny, sounds dumb, and relates a little bit to the idea of ‘squeezing all the juice out of your skills’. 24XX ..read more

Day 23 of my Adventure Calendar. For 24 days, up until Christmas, I plan to release a lil bit of RPG content. Want to join as well? Join the jam! Image: Volcano by Rachid Lotf Oh boy, I almost made it 24 days! For this entry, I’m going to share the draft/notes I made for the A Town, A Forest, A Dungeon Jam by Yochai Gal that I never finished/submitted. They will be a bit rough, but hey, there might be some inspiration in here! Outline Near a mighty mountain range lies the village of Ember’s Rest. It lies at the mouth of a fertile valley named Baasia’s Boon, which leads to Mount Sel ..read more

Day 22 of my Adventure Calendar. For 24 days, up until Christmas, I plan to release a lil bit of RPG content. Want to join as well? Join the jam! Image: Climbing the Mammoth by Chris Karbach I’ve gone bouldering a few times recently, and it had me thinking about, well, climbing. I came up with the following, which should tie into Cairn and Block, Dodge, Parry. Core inspirations were Lowlife by Sam Sorenson and Veins of the Earth by Patrick Stuart. Time, Gear, Skill This framework is based off the core idea of Time, Gear & Skill: If you have none or one, a task is impossible, if ..read more

Day 21 of my Adventure Calendar. For 24 days, up until Christmas, I plan to release a lil bit of RPG content. Want to join as well? Join the jam! Image: The Monk by Lorenzo Lanfranconi Today: Individuals with special powers that have to follow a set of rules that are so inscrutable that its doctrine might as well be randomly determined – whether it’s an esoteric holy text, an elaborate code of conduct, a space book, or perhaps direct communion with the gods. Simply put, this idea consists of these parts: Warriors with special gifts, akin to Jedi, Space Marines, warrior monks, pal ..read more

Day 20 of my Adventure Calendar. For 24 days, up until Christmas, I plan to release a lil bit of RPG content. Want to join as well? Join the jam! Image: Samurai Trees by Alex Nice Learning new skills in Block, Dodge, Parry is about finding new trainers. However, historically, sword training was also formalized within schools and academies. So, let’s dive into that! I’m going to theme this after ‘swordplay’ in general; whether that features longswords, rapiers, katanas or fuck it, axes, is up to you. Also, roll or pick, whatever you feel like. Location of the School The school is ..read more

Day 18 of my Adventure Calendar. For 24 days, up until Christmas, I plan to release a lil bit of RPG content. Want to join as well? Join the jam! Image: Astral Aberration by Erskine These are rumors, whispers and possibly facts about the Starlight Sages. Some might be false. Some might hide a darker truth. The order of Starlight Sages study the stars, in which they see premonitions of the future. They often carry the weight of prophecy. Not only that; the night sky is alive. The stars aren’t what they seem. They perform an ever-shifting dance, and it is only the Starlight Sages th ..read more

Day 17 of my Adventure Calendar. For 24 days, up until Christmas, I plan to release a lil bit of RPG content. Want to join as well? Join the jam! Image: Polymorph by Mazert Young Ok, this one got a bit out of hand; it became an entire new module for Block, Dodge, Parry. When I wrote Block, Dodge, Parry, I didn’t quite know what to do with rules for polymorphing, transformation, and the like. Now, just after the 1st anniversary of Block, Dodge, Parry, something ‘clicked’ for me and I think I found a way to have fun transformations that gel well with the base game ..read more
