This blog post covers the importance of budget season for emergency management professionals at educational institutions and how to identify budget necessities.
Budget Season for EM Professionals
There are many articles and conference sessions devoted to building, configuring, and improving EM programs. However, the budget allocated to EM expenditures, while seldom discussed, always seems to be the defining measure that can make or break our efforts. We can talk about building and improving all day long, but, without proper funding, many of our goals will never be fulfilled ..read more

In every disaster, there are hard, time-sensitive decisions to make, and a coordinated response increases the chances that people make the right calls. It is critical that utilities and local and state emergency management departments communicate their strategy and priorities to one another.
By coordinating the response, emergency responders can increase the speed and efficiency with which they get the area back up and running. For instance, suppose there are two different utilities, Company A and Company B, that serve an area hit by a hurricane. Each provides pow ..read more

Effective emergency management is critical for long-term care facilities (LTCFs) to ensure regulatory compliance and improve patient care. But many LTCFs still rely on cumbersome manual processes. The challenge? Police officers often lack the specialized skills needed to help these individuals and without access to mental health professionals, many end up incarcerated. According to a report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 43 percent of those in state prisons have been diagnosed with at ..read more

Climate adaptation is accelerating.
Data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that 34 percent of the contiguous United States fell into severe to extreme drought categories in February 2022, while just six percent of the country was considered severely to extremely wet during the same period. This is a marked deviation from the first two decades of the 21st century, which saw a combination of both extensive drought and wetness.
The 2022 hurricane season, meanwhile, is on track for another above-average year. Wildfire activity also continues to ri ..read more

Nothing has changed in the modern world.
Cyber attackers use the same approach, targeting essential physical resources and systems. For instance, nuclear power plants in the United States have been attacked by hackers, includin ..read more
