I like DT floaters for the ability to turn it around when one end gets to worn out. The Cortland 444 Peach remains my favorite. I like the old Air Cell Supreme, too. Statistics: Posted by billems — 05/06/24 03:05 ..read more

There are a host of fine makers here on the Forum that will build a 8 or 8 1/2 ft hollow 5 wt rod for you. If you choose your hardware wisely you should keep the weight at 4 ozs or less. Dennis Menscer makes a really nice rod in that vein. Richard, the fishn’ Pole Statistics: Posted by Random Casts — 05/06/24 00:48 ..read more

I already have a 6’3” 4wt bamboo rod and will also be getting a 7’6” 5wt rod. When I will be looking for a longer bamboo rod, maybe an 8’6” 5wt, what make, builder, should I be looking for? I don’t like heavy bamboo rods. A replica bamboo rod is also ok. Thank you for your advice. Statistics: Posted by DinoC — 05/06/24 00:06 ..read more

A Medalist will handle anything you hook on a 5 wt. it will be fine in the salt. You just need to rinse it well after using it. At one time it was commonly used for bonefish and other salt water fish. In the 60’s and early 70’s it was all I could afford. I caught every thing from bonefish to albacore with a 1498. There are better, more elegant reels available, but, especially with a 5 wt, it will get the job done. Can't get any more classic than a Fin Nor, as mentioned quietly by someone else. And agree with the above, a Medalist will eventually corrode from salt. Statistics: Posted by Webfly — 05/05/24 13:09 ..read more

That's a nicely tied fly Godfroy and sure it would work down my way too. Thank you, I will be bringing some of my flies and rods to Devon in August. It is always a pleasure to re-visit my birth county. Paul. Statistics: Posted by Godfroy — 05/04/24 10:26 ..read more

That's a nicely tied fly Godfroy and sure it would work down my way too. One of my favourites is very similar, a version of the CDC loopwing with the cock hackle fibres at the front tied false on the sides and top only - good emerger version! Works very well varying the materials to match the mayfly species, I think it's a decent caddis imitation too which is a nice bonus. Will have to try your version for the duns! Thanks for the comments CreakyCane - I made it to the upper Teign recently too near Fernworthy, where our long winter is finally starting to relent and the river is waking up. Mar ..read more

Still a matter of opinion. Everything posted here is. Except the recommendations to try a number of different lines and see what you like. “Better” is completely subjective. Statistics: Posted by RMorrison — 05/03/24 21:04 ..read more

Whether DT or WF does not really matter--nor does silk or synthetic make any difference...Just do not overline the rod. Not wanting an argument but I have to disagree with your first statement, because my slow and medium rods do not work well with WF lines. I fish such rods a lot, and I've found that natural silk lines work better on them than any plastic. With a WF they feel like what your last statement stays, they feel overloaded.
