The BeerMongers will officially celebrate their 15th Anniversary in September, though they’ll also be celebrating all year long through a series of collaborations. Their first release in the series, an Ordinary English Bitter brewed with Away Days Brewing, lands this Thursday at their SE 11th and Caruthers taproom. Mongers’ owner and founder Sean Campbell “did not want to ‘force’ anything and let the projects evolve organically,” hence why he’s spreading out these anniversary releases. “I don’t want to do anything just for the sake of doing it,” says Campbell and adds that he simply wants to ..read more

I can’t recall another time in Portland, since the Craft Brewers Conference in 2015, when the local beverage industry was so excited for such a huge industry wide series of events. So please believe me when I tell you… this is a big fuggin’ deal! Cidermakers from around the world, as we speak, are already on their way to participate in The American Cider Association’s biggest event of the year, CiderCon 2024 (January 16-19), which has been synced up with Oregon Cider Week (January 13-21) and expected to draw thousands attendees for tours, tastings, educational workshops, networking opportuniti ..read more

The Fresh Hop Conundrum

Anyone who follows me on Instagram knows that I revel, more than most, in the spectacular abbondanza that is fresh hop (FH) season. This Pacific Northwest phenomenon of racing just harvested hops back to breweries in order to create one-of-a-kind beers is unlike any other in the world. And I’m still here for it. But in recent years, I’ve also come to have real concerns about how local demand propels this season, not to mention the brewers and retailers who can live or die by it. To quantify my concerns, I did some research and found some interesting numbers from the 2023 Fresh Hop Season to co ..read more

The Meaning of Now: Taking Stock of Oregon’s Craft Beer Climate

It’s funny… this space hadn’t seen new content in over 8 months, as if I’d fallen off a horse and was afraid to get back on. Sometimes life happens, inspiration goes away. Not quite writers block, more like getting lost in a creative fog. Regardless, I’ll never take for granted the power of inspiration. So, just the other night I was navigating the depths of instagram and happened upon an image of Breakside Brewing’s Flagship IPA, one of a few local inspirations that finally got me into the style, when I came to an epiphany, if you will. In almost any other year, Breakside winning silver in th ..read more

Five Years On

Over the weekend I belatedly realized that this here beer blog had eclipsed a few milestones. Thursday the 5th marked the fifth anniversary of the site being live and my last post in August marked my 100th article written here. I had no idea! I suppose my cluelessness to such milestones can be attributed to distraction. My days at work are generally filled with constant deadlines to stay ahead of incoming shipments at Day One, a far cry from my less responsible former life, doing Support and Marketing at a brewery software company. Over the past 5 years much has changed in my life, as well as ..read more

As the world’s largest rare beer auction has continued to grow each and every year, the time has finally come to move into a bigger space. This year’s iteration of Brews For New Avenues VIP and General Sessions on Saturday, and Friday’s Oysters & Guezue event will all be held under a much larger roof this year at The Redd on Salmon Street, at 831 SE Salmon St. Inside The Redd on Salmon This year’s event also celebrates the 25th Anniversary of it’s non-profit benefactor, New Avenues For Youth, who’s work has benefited over 300,000 young people in Portland by providing prevention and interve ..read more

“It doesn’t matter what they say in the papers ’cause it’s always been the same old scene, there’s a new band in town, but you can’t get the sound from a story in a magazine, aimed at your average teen.” – Billy Joel It’s rare for me to do karaoke without singing this tune. I first started singing it in the karaoke bars of Dongducheon Korea, namely The Sonata Club (which probably doesn’t exist anymore), back in 1997-1998. I know it like the back of my hand; a sing-a-long even millennials know. This bridge section is the song’s zenith with some hard truths about trends: fed by marketing, fads w ..read more

730 Days Later: A New Reality

It was on March 17th 2020, 2 years ago today, that Oregon’s Governor enacted a mandate requiring the closure of indoor dining at bars, breweries, and restaurants. Within those first few weeks of uncertainty, countless businesses closed, at least temporarily, and thousands of retail workers were furloughed. Hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes, and toilet paper were scarce, if available at all. It’s crazy to think it’s been 2 years since COVID-19 shook us to our core. And it seems safe to say that our perception of time in general has shifted, like so many pivots we’ve all taken to adapt to this ..read more

Style Series: Doppelbock

In commemoration of craftbeerscribe.com eclipsing 4 years, it seems apt to revisit a “series” I created 3 years ago that never saw a second article. And since it’s a celebration, why not investigate Bavaria’s favorite beer for holiday revelry, Doppelbock and the Bock style in general. What started as a light Ale in Northern Germany became known the world over as a hearty Lager, made for special occasions primarily in the winter and spring. Bock beer originates in the town of Einbeck, popularized by a brewery of the same name which was founded in 1378 and still in operation today. In the early ..read more
