Is replacing handle possible with artesian well shut-off valve?

Hi everyone, I have an artesian well that is for irrigation at my house. I'm in the process of moving the location of where the pump used to be. I need to shut off the flow to lay my new pipe direction. While they used a solid bronze or solid brass large body for what I assume is a gate-valve that should have the worm like gears in it, the handle was made of cheap regular steel is is barely holding together. Is it possible for the handle and packing nut to be replaced while under pressure... Read more ..read more

Two sources for a hose bib?

I have very hard water at my home so I have a water softener. I have a hose bib on the side of my house, right near where the main water comes in which is also where the water softener is. I have access to the plumbing both before and after the water softener. I am looking into the possibility of adding some sort of A/B valve where I can switch the water source for the hose bib between the pre- and post-softened water. Cars wash better with softened water, while plants and flowers thrive... Read more ..read more

Sprinkler manifold suggestions

Our main water line was replaced a few months back and that cut the pipe leading to the sprinkler manifold in the front yard. A picture of that manifold taken from the side is in this old post: https://www.plumbingforums.com/threads/leaking-irrigation-valve.12706/post-96402 The sprinkler bodies are 6" (plus or minus a fraction of an inch) apart (center to center). The input side is old galvanized and that has to go. Probably replace all of the valves with Superior 800 - did that... Read more ..read more

I have an irrigation leak in one of the verticle lines and needed to shut off the the water at the backflow preventer. While at the box, I noticed that the shutoff handles on the ball valves were rusted off. I was able get the water closed off but now I need to replace the handles. As you can see in the picture, I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking at here. Anyone have any suggestions on what I need to do next? Also, a link to the proper replacement handle needed would be great as... Read more ..read more

Pump output adapter fails

Hi, My 2 hp pump output threaded 1 1/2” PVC adapter seems to work great for about six months and then just comes out of the pump. The threads seem to get smaller because they don’t seem damaged. I also don’t noticed any over heating. Could it be the vibration of the pump. It is sitting directly on a concrete pad. Thanks for any ideas ..read more

Would this idea add a little extra backflow protection for a drip system supplied by a hose bib?

I have a planting bed with 100' of drip irrigation tubing that I'm running off a hose bib. Our house is on a well, so I'm not dealing with a municipal water supply. I have a brass vacuum breaker on the hose bib per our local code, and I have another so-called "back-flow preventer" (looks like just another vacuum breaker, except plastic) that screws onto the the brass vaccum breaker to start the drip piping. It would be a major deal to plumb a real backflow preventer into the system... Read more ..read more

Removing black/hard scale on inside of pumps?

I have one of these well made irrigation pumps from Sta Rite. But mine is over 25 years old I estimate. I'm moving the location of it and decided I should rebuild it. The Artesian well water has created a thick and hard shell of black scale on inside of the pump. I think I should remove it or the shattered pieces could jam up the pump during operation. Is there an efficient method to remove it? I'm using rust dissolver but that really only works once the exposed cast iron is free. I can take... Read more ..read more

Redirecting water at edge of slab?

My neighbor had gutters put on recently. It drains onto a concrete slab which tilts towards my yard. We always received some water from there, but it was only a small part of the roof, now it is a much larger area and it flooded pretty deep at the last rain. If it would just enter our property 5 feet more towards the street it would go into the lawn, and not the dirt, and wouldn't be a problem. I'm thinking of gluing a strip of plastic, like lawn edging, to the side of this concrete slab... Read more ..read more

Any alternatives to this Berkeley pump type?

I have an old irrigation pump that I want to replace and it looks like this. (mine is an old Sta Rite maybe? and this one says Berkeley). Are there any recommendations for a cast iron 1.5hp pump besides the Berkeley that look like this? I'm curious what other brands make this type because this type does work well with my sprinkler system. It's just has too much corrosion from many years of life, I doubt the sealing plate is good ..read more
