Brett Yormark, the Big 12 commissioner, has been described by Sports Illustrated as “the college sports shark that never stops swimming.” Having lost Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC, he’s not playing around. He has no qualms about patrolling the waters of college football, looking for schools to steal away from other conferences. “We have a plan for expansion,” Yormark announced at Big 12 football media days earlier this month. “I’m not going to really address it today. Hopefully we can execute it sooner than later.” And so he has. On Thursday, Colorado, following a unanimous vote of approval ..read more

Border crossings: What drives families? Love | Opinion

For weeks, NewsNation has been reporting that asylum-seekers and migrants at the Texas border are suffering in searing triple-digit heat. I recently watched a video of several families, waist-deep in water, lifting their children over razor wire to waiting hands on the other side. My breath caught as one toddler with pink pants and pigtails bobbled in the handoff and almost slipped from her father’s hands. The desperation of these parents couldn’t have been more clear. What realities lay behind them, that they would take such risks to find a better place for their families? T ..read more

As college graduates struggle under piles of unpaid loans, Democrats and Republicans are bringing very different ideas to the table on how to deal with the rising cost of higher education. The average yearly tuition at a public university was $9,400 in 2021, and $35,000 at a private university, according to federal statistics — and by all measures it is still rising fast. Earlier this week, the Biden administration revealed its plans to cancel $130 million in federal student debt for more than 7,000 attendees of a for-profit Colorado college that allegedly used deceptive marketing strategie ..read more

Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff spent last week in Las Vegas telling the college football world that everything was fine: The Pac-12 was on the verge of a media rights deal that would stabilize the conference. “We’ll get our media rights deal done, we’ll announce the deal,” he said. “I think the realignment that’s going on in college athletics will come to an end for this cycle. … The longer we wait for the media deal, the better our options get. “ It was hard to believe at times — especially as Colorado’s athletic director slipped out of town without answering questions about his univ ..read more

Soccer legends Marta of Brazil and Christine Sinclair of Canada are staring down history once again. Marta and Sinclair could become the first player — man or woman — to score in six World Cups. The pair are in an elite club with Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players to score in five World Cups, according to ESPN. Marta and Sinclair were the first to do so in 2019. Ronaldo joined them in 2022. Sinclair had a chance from the penalty spot in Canada’s first group stage match against Nigeria but missed.
