When you want to light up the snow, but not the whole alley, slap on a MagMod MagGrid!   How it was done: Settings: f/2.8, ISO 100, shutter 1/200th There is one light behind the couple with one MagMod MagGrid. Flash was set at about 1/8th. Light is pointed straight on, about shoulder height, and was set up 10 feet away to still get a nice spread of lit up snow. The rest is natural light, which is helped by the reflection of the alley ground and walls, the open shade of the alley, and the bride’s white dress.           This Educational Post was Brought t ..read more

I love night sky portraits! This was taken just 2 hours outside Chicago in Middle Fork River Forest Preserve at about 11pm.          How it was done: Settings: f/2.8, shutter: 10 seconds, lens: 15mm, ISO: 1600 I had one flash with a blue MagMod Pro Creative Gels pointed toward the tree (camera left), and one flash with a MagMod MagGrid pointed to the Couple (camera left, just out of frame). The flashes were at 1/16th Since it was incredibly dark (almost a new moon), I was able to freeze the subjects during the long exposure Single capture (one frame, no c ..read more

I thought I’d show a little behind the scenes for a first dance at a wedding! This venue had big windows on the main floor that opened up to an outdoor area. I thought it would be fun to get some photos from the outside looking in, while my 2nd photographer took some from inside.         How it was done: I used 2 Godox AD200 flashes: one inside to camera left, and one inside to camera right. They are each on light stands, about 10 feet up so that I could get them far back.     Here is a diagram that shows the placement of the flashes:     &nbs ..read more

Whenever a venue features huge windows with a beautiful view, I want to make sure I’m properly exposing both the inside and outside. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t also lighting up the entire room, and bring the focus to the Ceremony moments.   How it was done: There are two AD200 flashes up front outside the frame, slightly behind the couple and on each side, pointed in toward them. They each have a MadMod MagGrid on them. I used a mirror to reflect the scene on the bottom.           This Educational Post was Brought to You by MagMod!   &nbs ..read more
