Mosquito Control Experts Detect Widespread West Nile Virus in Area’s Mosquitoes
NAPLES, FL (August 26, 2021) –Collier Mosquito Control District (the District) scientists are finding West Nile virus (WNV) in local mosquitoes caught in traps located in Ave Maria, Immokalee, Golden Gate Estates, and the City of Naples. Residents throughout the county are urged to drain containers of standing water around their homes and to wear repellents when outdoors to protect themselves from the mosquito-borne disease.

NAPLES, FL (November 10, 2022) – Free mosquito traps are available to Collier County’s residents beginning on Monday, Nov. 14, in the wake of both Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole. Collier Mosquito Control District (District) received the residential traps as a donation from Inzecto and is working with community partners to distribute them to the public. NAPLES, FL (October 20, 2022) – As part of its long-term plan to modernize its aerial fleet, the Collier Mosquito Control District’s (District) fleet now includes a Twin Otter fixed-wing and a second Bell 407 helicopter. They are conducting aerial treatment missions for the control of both larval and adult mosquitoes. The District is preparing for boundary expansion to serve a growing community, and these ships bring increased capacity and reliability as they round out the fleet to include three airplanes and four helicopters.

The population growth in Collier County is creating a challenge for the Collier Mosquito Control District (District) as it strives to continue to meet its mission to protect public health and comfort.
The problem is this: the District currently encompasses only 401 square miles of the county and does not conduct control efforts outside of its boundaries. Collier Mosquito Control District Alerts Residents of West Nile Virus in Local Mosquitoes
NAPLES, FL (July 23, 2021) –Collier Mosquito Control District (the District) scientists have detected West Nile virus (WNV) in local mosquitoes caught in traps located in Ave Maria, Immokalee, and northern Golden Gate Estates. They discovered the virus July 22 while testing mosquitoes in the District’s laboratory – a process conducted weekly. The mosquito samples were sent to the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories-Tampa for verification, a process that typically takes two weeks.
