Blind Beginnings Blog

Growing up, I didn’t really have the opportunity to witness accurate and positive representation of persons with disability in media. Whenever a character with a disability was present in a show or movie, they were usually a side character with no real character development or were often portrayed with negative stereotypes that were presented as a joke.  Media has come a long way in the past couple of decades, and representation for persons with disabilities is becoming more normalized and is moving in a more positive direction. I wanted to focus on one particular show that I have been wa ..read more

My Dark Table Experience

In December I went to the Dark Table Restaurant with a grade 11 Co-Op class from my school and I would like to talk about my experience and what I liked about the restaurant. I really enjoyed going to a restaurant that is completely dark, because it gives sighted people the experience of how it feels to be blind. The waiters and waitresses at the restaurant are all blind or visually impaired. When a sighted person goes into the restaurant they have to figure out how to eat their food in the dark, without using any light. This also allows them to be able to use their sense of taste more, becaus ..read more

You may or may not know that for the first two years of Blind Beginnings it was entirely run by volunteers.  Everything from bookkeeping, grant writing, program planning and delivery was done by volunteers.  For the next few years we had one full-time staff and one very part-time grant writer, but all other work was done by volunteers.  This ratio of a few staff to many volunteers still exists today.  From our Directors of the Board, to our fundraising committee, t ..read more
