True Crime By Dennette Bender (Russell)
It was not a typical Friday in 1994. It was the first day of the annual Decatur Celebration, a day many in central Illinois looked forward to. It was the marking of another great midwestern summer. Local corn harvesting, farming, and vacations were coming to an end. Children were getting ready to return to school, and local college students were heading back to classes at Millikin University. I was looking forward to this downtown event, as I do every year. Several roads would be blocked in all four directions. I would have to remember which roads were o ..read more

Boardwalk Empire is a great T.V. Series that centers on the building of Atlantic City, Prohibition, the Depression and a man named Enoch “Nucky” Thompson.
“Nucky” Thompson, played by Steve Buscemi is a fictional character based loosely on the real life person, of Enoch “Nucky” Johnson. And that’s part of the fun of the show for me. It was enjoyable looking up the characters and finding out who was real and who was not.
Many of the characters were based upon real people and depict their rise to power, or their fall from power. Such as Al Capone, Meyer Lansky, Charlie Luciano ..read more

Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the most famous architects in the world. He lived and worked between 1867 and 1959. His works have inspired millions, but at the same time, his life had dark tragedies.
I have been a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright for quite some time, and try to visit his structures everywhere I travel. This time I got to visit his home in Spring Green, Wisconsin. The beauty of the site and the savagery of this tale contrast with each other.
But, let’s go back to where this thread of Frank’s life started.
He was young and working out of his studio in Oak Park ..read more

The Story of Billy Milligan
By Brian J. Smith
THE year of 1977 was a year to remember.
President Jimmy Carter signed legislation to form The United States Department Of Energy. Movie goers waited in line at The Avco Center Theater in Los Angeles to see the spectacle that was Star Wars. The first Apple 2 Series computers went on sale and opened a new dimension of technology never seen before.
For every good thing that comes along, something bad always surfaces. It’s evil and dark; waiting amongst the shadows for the right opportunity to place its sinister footsteps in the annals of history. Thi ..read more

Why were we spared by the Dating Game Killer?
With much fanfare and hype, the ads on TV promoted a new docudrama about The Dating Game Killer, Rodney Alcala, a serial killer preying on young girls in the 1970s. The promos continually interrupted my regular tv shows. Although irritating, it piqued my interest. Why is the thought of a (relatively) good looking serial rapist and killer, like a Ted Bundy and now Alcala, intriguing? True crime and the psycho-analysis of the person behind it has always been interesting to me. Even a grotesque John Wayne Gacy or Hannible-lik ..read more

I recently traveled to Cincinnati on vacation, and while there I did some research on the Serial Killer known as The Cincinnati Strangler.
Normally, when I travel and research these killers, I go to the neighborhoods where the killer lived or where the victims lived, or the crimes took place.
Often from visiting these areas you can get a feel for the crime. Or some sense of what might have been happening in the surrounding location or even the minds of the people involved.
However in Cincinnati, the crimes were committed decades ago and the neighborhoods have changed ..read more

Bronson is a 2008 movie, based loosely on the book of the same name, written by Michael Peterson also known as Charles Bronson, and first published in 2000.
The movie is an artistic madhouse. Tom Hardy does a masterful job portraying Charlie Bronson, Britain’s most violent prison inmate.
The movie loosely covers the book which Charlie wrote about his time in prisons and mad houses all over Britain. The autobiographical book goes through a lot of years so the movie is crushed down to try and tell the tale. It does a good job of it.
Basically Charlie went to prison for robbery ..read more
