Are we on the same page? Individual interpretations of missions within human service nonprofits
Wiley | Nonprofit Management and Leadership
by David Berlan, Sungdae Lim, Portia Diñoso Campos
1w ago
Abstract Without unique missions to serve a public purpose, nonprofits have no justification to exist. Much of the focus on mission in scholarship centers on concerns with mission drift and pressures from external actors. Yet internal dynamics may be just as important in developing a common mission and the coherent activities pursuing it. This research identifies the structural forces shaping organizational members' individual mission conceptions and leading them to emulate and converge around a shared dominant conception. We apply the concept of institutional isomorphism to 104 interviews con ..read more

The publicness of private foundations: Online accountability and Internet presence
Wiley | Nonprofit Management and Leadership
by Gowun Park, David Suárez
1M ago
Abstract Private foundations face persistent charges of plutocracy and secrecy, undermining their legitimacy as philanthropic organizations that contribute to the public good, yet they can respond to the criticism proactively through online accountability and Internet presence. To what extent do foundations use web-based tools to demonstrate public accountability, how are these tools used for this purpose, and what explains foundation participation in this form of self-regulation? We argue that managerialism, organizational fields, and stakeholder relationships will matter for online accountab ..read more

Women in the pulpit: Characteristics of protestant churches led by a female pastor
Wiley | Nonprofit Management and Leadership
by Young‐joo Lee

Abstract This study examines how congregational characteristics of a Protestant church relate to having a female pastor, using the glass ceiling and glass cliff theories. The analysis of the 2018–2019 National Congregational Study and the National Survey of Religious Leaders linked data shows that churches with a greater number of participants are less likely to have a female pastor, implying that the glass ceiling is more pervasive in larger congregations. The results also reveal that churches with stagnant or declining revenues are more likely to have a female pastor, which is consistent wit ..read more

Abstract Emerging research on followership has overwhelmingly been focused on for-profit organizations. This research investigates four British congregations from different Christian denominations to explore how differing contexts shape the understanding of followership in nonprofit organizations. Using implicit followership theory, we analyze the value sets deriving from theological-ideological, institutional, and local contexts and explore informants' perceptions of ideal followership attributes. By conducting 26 semi-structured interviews with three different types of actors, we found that ..read more

Wiley | Nonprofit Management and Leadership
by Dorothea Maria Stock, Markus Gmür, Philipp Erpf

Abstract This meta-analysis examines the state of research on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and performance in nonprofit organizations (NPOs). The evidence on this relationship in the business context is already well consolidated. Nonprofit research also elaborated review publications on EO. However, existing knowledge lacks an examination of the EO–performance relationship in NPOs. This study includes 25 publications in the correlation-based meta-analysis and finds that various performance goals are positively affected. Nonetheless, the results reveal several incon ..read more

The antecedents of conformity in an institutionalized federated system: The case of local united ways

Abstract To what extent do organizations conform to external pressures within a highly institutionalized federated system? Drawing on the theory of middle-status conformity, and distinguishing between ascribed and achieved status, we examine variation in linguistic conformity across the United Way (UW) system. Using a unique set of data collected from multiple sources, we analyzed the effect of both ascribed status (age) and achieved status (fundraising performance) on local UW conformity to the community impact language of the United Way Worldwide (UWW). We found a curvilinear relationship be ..read more
