CALEDONIA — It’s back to work for the Cavaliers after their dramatic Game 3 win over Choctaw Central on Monday. There’s another playoff series to prepare for, and possibly the toughest they’ll face, but they’ve been all business from the start in what is turning out to be a memorable season.
“It isn’t just the competition with these girls,” head coach Andy Finch said of the team’s effort after their 4-2 victory on Monday, “it’s the fight, they’re just non-stop. It’s like we tell them, keep throwing body punches and eventually a big one is going to land. That’s who these girls are ..read more

For as well as Mississippi State has played at times this season, the Bulldogs still have not won a Southeastern Conference series at home.
MSU drew an extremely challenging home slate, losing two out of three to Texas A&M, Florida and Tennessee, and it will not get any easier with No. 14 Georgia visiting Nusz Park this weekend to conclude the regular season.
UGA (37-13, 11-10 SEC) is one game ahead of MSU in the conference standings, and playing at the hitter-friendly Jack Turner Stadium, Georgia leads the SEC with 78 home runs. Jayda Kearney and Sara Mosley are responsible for 17 and 16 ..read more

WASHINGTON – I can’t tell you how many people I know who do not like former President Donald Trump yet nonetheless smell prosecutorial overreach in Manhattan.
District Attorney Alvin Bragg has charged the former president with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. Trump has pleaded not guilty.
The case began with Michael Cohen, Trump’s onetime fixer, making a “hush money” payment to the former adult film actress known as Stormy Daniels to keep her from revealing information about an apparent sexual relationship with Trump in 2006. Bragg used the fact that Cohen paid ..read more

Two weeks before Columbus voters go to the polls to determine the fate of a $36 million bond issue for repairs and improvements in the Columbus Municipal School District, citizens finally have the information they need to make an informed decision.
On Wednesday CMSD superintendent Stanley Ellis released a detailed account of how the funds would be used and also affirmed that part of the plans include the “repurposing” of two of the district’s five elementary schools, Franklin Academy and Fairview.
Until Wednesday, officials declined to say directly that closures were part of the district’s pla ..read more

Within the past 48 hours, student protesters occupied Hamilton Hall at Columbia University and then were forcibly removed by New York police. I knew that building well when I was an undergrad there in the 1970s.
Columbia, like most colleges, tended left. The campus had become notorious in 1968 for its protests. By the time I arrived in 1975, things were quiet, but one could still detect a certain nostalgia for the ‘60s — a sense that the students who turned the campus upside down were righteous and brave, whereas we, their successors, were careerist drudges.
That sentiment matters ..read more

After cracking the top 25 in the latest RPI rankings following Wednesday night’s Governor’s Cup victory over Ole Miss, No. 16 Mississippi State returns to Dudy Noble Field this weekend for a three-game series against No. 23 Alabama.
The Crimson Tide (28-16, 9-12 Southeastern Conference) have played well at home in SEC action, taking series from Tennessee, South Carolina and Arkansas. But the road has not been kind to Alabama — the Tide were swept at Georgia and Kentucky before taking two of three last weekend at Ole Miss.
Alabama has five starting position players batting .320 or better, led b ..read more

JACKSON — The first serious effort by Mississippi’s Republican-led Legislature to expand Medicaid was in danger of collapsing Thursday.
Senate leaders continued to insist on a work requirement for new enrollees, and House leaders said voters should decide whether to extend coverage to more low-income people who can’t afford private insurance.
Republican Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann told reporters that passing Medicaid expansion would be the first order of business during the 2025 legislative session. But while responding to questions, he said until the current session ends, “nothing is dead, dead ..read more

Williams
Mississippi State defensive lineman Trevion Williams was arrested by MSU Police on Wednesday for an alleged DUI as well as improper equipment, according to records from the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office.
Williams is from Crystal Springs, Miss. and played in just three games as a redshirt freshman last fall before sustaining a season-ending injury. He was on track to become a starter in 2024.
“We are aware of the matter and are continuing to gather information,” head coach Jeff Lebby said in a statement. “We have no further comment at this time.”
