We’ve been blessed with some great music this year, from the likes of Shaé Universe, Lalah Hathaway, Kenyon Dixon and more.
This week’s spotlight is for Hiatus Kaiyote, a band I came across in 2016 and fell in love with immediately. Their soulful yet alternative sound makes it hard to box them into a genre, much of their music reflects the complexity of life and love, which resonates with so many listeners.
Their latest album “Love Heart Cheat Code” has been heavily anticipated and proves to be another worthy addition to their discography. Exploring a number of sounds, we travel through sonic ..read more

Khruangbin is back with another phenomenal album “A LA SALA”, meaning ‘To the living room’ in Spanish.
Inviting us into their world of mostly instrumental sounds, the Houston natives are displaying intimacy, intricacy and groove throughout the 12 tracks on this record.
The album comes to just under 40 minutes and is something you can leave on repeat without skipping, something that can be said for a lot of Khruangbin’s discography.
Have a listen to the album ‘A LA SALA’ and let the sounds take you away.

Lalah Hathaway’s ‘Self Portrait’ album has been on constant rotation over the last few weeks here at Soul Surge, having been reminded of her greatness via her recent feature on Shaé Universe’s project ‘Love’s Letter’.
The album is a self-reflective and open journal, exploring heartbreak, letting go, rebirth, independence and life lessons.
Coated in velvet vocals and driven by soulful instrumentation, ‘Self Portrait’ feels like a hug from a big sister, telling you it’ll be alright in the end.
Songs such as ‘On your own’ and ‘What goes around’ serve as reminders of our own power and encourage us ..read more

An artistic powerhouse who communicates her inspirations in a multitude of ways through her self-advocacy, documentation and individuality.
With a number of full-length bodies of musical works, Solange has always allowed insights into her mind and heart through intricate documentation along her journey, with no fear of re-introducing and re-inventing herself.
Her art infuses fashion, photography, visual experimentation and audibly expansive explorations of her sound. Her last three projects (True, A Seat At The Table and When I Get Home) are all varied in sound and vibe, yet still communicate ..read more

This week, instrumental music has taken the front seat at Soul Surge.
It’s been one of those weeks where instrumentation without a concentration on lyrics is what the soul has been calling for. We’ve seen an influx of instrumental projects over the last couple of years, but Vincent Fenton aka FKJ (French Kiwi Juice) is an artist that stands out for so many reasons.
He’s a French multi-instrumentalist, singer and musician who is known for his mesmerising solo performances. Having seen FKJ in Paris in early 2023, it can be said that he is one of the most phenomenal artists to see live, so if you ..read more
