Western Canada’s wildfire season is off and running – in Alberta especially. More than 375,000 hectares of Alberta landscape have burned in 2023 as of early this week. On Sunday evening, Alberta Wildfire reported 109 active wildfires in the province, including 28 out-of-control blazes, although 19 were being held and 62 were under control. The agency was still looking for origins and at the time, 84 were still unknown, while investigators suspect humans caused 15, and lightning sparked 10. Cooler weather has helped fire suppression efforts but situation remains volatile. Although the state of ..read more

It was almost 10 years ago – Plume Labs was an idea and then an entity, almost overnight. We built the company to help people answer a question: What is in the air I breathe?  We started by collecting information, making sense of the data, turning it around in our models – adding in more inputs and coming up with new information. Forecast, maps, advice – all found in our free air quality app… but there was a gap.  How could we help people understand what they were breathing, not just outside, but all over the place. Inside, underground, on a bus, in a mine? Our personal pollution m ..read more

Watch the Climate Impact Program overview session from the September 23rd Virtual Summit In January 2022 we were presented with a challenge as part of our joining the AccuWeather family – save 1 million lives with our combined expertise, tools, and resources. That’s a big statement to make in the air quality world given the long term impacts air pollution exposure has on our health. The questions that surfaced as a result were solid. In particular if we were thinking in terms of measuring our work’s impact.  The World Economic Forum (WEF) also released their Global Threats Report for 20 ..read more

Wildfires have been among the most talked about natural disasters in the United States over the last decade, the West in particular. Dramatic and deadly, hard to predict, and even harder to manage wildfires and the resulting smoke are a major threat to millions of people around the world. We have teamed up with the undisputed wildfire experts, the Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA), to tackle one of the key tools needed in the fight to protect health and safety (as well as our homes and businesses)–information. Together we have begun exploring how real-time and predictive wildfire and smo ..read more

We hope you’ve all been having a happy and healthy spring so far this year.  The Plume Labs team has been working closely with our new colleagues at AccuWeather to explore how we could have the highest impact together. A thank you letter from our founders. Dear friends, In 2014, we launched Plume Labs to make air quality information accessible to everyone.  Since then, our growing community has been at the forefront of the fight for clean air. You helped us bring live air quality forecasts to the world with our Air Report mobile app, our global air quality map, and our street-level pollution maps. Your pre-orders helped us design and deploy the first personal air quality sensor, Flow, and distribute it to 74 countries. Thanks to you, there are now more air pollution sensors in the hands of citizens ..read more

How we move around the city makes a difference, both in terms of how much pollution we create, AND how much pollution we breathe. It’s easy to guess what pollutes more when we consider driving a car, walking, or riding a bike, but what’s best for our lungs? Need help figuring it out? Don’t forget we’re taking $70 off Flow 2 personal pollution monitors until November 1st. Use the code FALLFLOW70  to save. Walk, bike, or drive? The University of Sheffield set out to answer our question—using Flow personal pollution monitors. The video above is a quick recap of the experiment ..read more
