You may have seen singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Salami Rose Joe Louis opening for Alice Phoebe Lou at Johnny Brenda’s in 2021, or supporting The Comet Is Coming at Underground Arts last year, but the former climate scientist, formally known as Lindsay Olsen, recently relocated to our neck of the woods, after establishing herself in Oakland’s music and arts scene.  “I just moved to Philly, but I did live [in Oakland] for a long time.  It was a very warm community of musicians who are very supportive of each other.  There’s a collective called SMARTBOMB, a ..read more

“I think, at a certain age, coming back around to all the different music you made in your life becomes important,” says Scott McCloud, guitarist of DC post-hardcore legends Soulside and Girls Against Boys (for whom he’s also the vocalist), whose New Wet Kojak just played their first proper shows in more than two decades this past weekend.  While the band briefly reunited in 2014 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of famed DC venue The Black Cat (the setting of many of my most noteworthy nights as a highschooler in the early aughts, growing up outside of the city), this weekend the band’s ..read more

“I was doing the two-set-a-night thing, which I hadn’t done in a while,” says Darren Weiss, AKA PAPA, who recently wrapped a tour where he played the role of both drummer and opening act for Irish singer/songwriter Sorcha Richardson, which included an October 16th date at The Foundry.  The tour was the first for Darren Weiss –also known for his work with Sky Ferreira, Lana Del Rey, Perfume Genius, Girls, and our friend Miya Folick, in addition to his own Monastereo – as PAPA in more than half a decade.  However, Darren is already preparing to return to the City of Brotherly Love and ..read more

Pussy Riot: Riot Days Comes to Ardmore (12/3 at Ardmore Music Hall)

More than two months since the announcement of the tour, I’m still in more-than-slight disbelief that Pussy Riot’s first-ever area appearance is not actually going to be in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection, but at Ardmore Music Hall.  This coming Sunday, December 3rd, the Russian feminist protest collective will take the stage of the Main Line venue – best known as a bastion for jam bands — after an afternoon matinee performance of “The Rock and Roll Playhouse Plays: Music of Queen for Kids.”  However, the unlikely pairing might actually be oddly fitting for a collec ..read more

Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio punk-emo band, Citizen, play an incredible sold out show at Brooklyn Bowl on November 19th. Playing songs from their latest record, Calling the Dogs, as well as fan favorites from previous records. With opening acts, Modern Color and Narrow Head, this was certainly a stacked bill and one I knew I couldn’t miss! Check out my photos from the show below (Citizen shown first, Narrow Head second). The post Citizen at Brooklyn Bowl appeared first on Philthy Mag ..read more

“You can expect that it is going to be joyful circle work, where the audience is as much a part of the show as we are,” says Canadian-born/Nashville-based singer/songwriter and activist Allison Russell of her band’s current live show.  “I came up in roots music/Americana music, and it’s always been music for the people.  And, to me, consent is everything.  It’s our job to create the circle where everyone feels safe and comfortable and welcome,” she adds, during a recent phone chat.  We actually had Russell in our neck of the woods not too long ago, when she played a rainy ..read more

This past Wednesday, November 22nd, a leather-clad Liz Phair gave Gen Xers the perfect pre-Thanksgiving emotional cleanse with a performance of her seminal ’93 debut, Exile in Guyville, as part of the album’s 30th anniversary tour.  The “legendary albums” performance had the now-56-year-old Phair performing the lo-fi masterpiece at Franklin Music Hall, her first stop at the venue since its renaming, having last played the room in 2004, while touring her controversially approachable (yet still great) 2003 self-titled LP, whose lead single, “Why Can’t I?” closed Wednesday night’s set. Later this week, alt-country singer/songwriter Lydia Loveless kicks off their first tour behind their sixth studio album, Nothing’s Gonna Stand In My Way Again, which dropped this September on their previous home, Bloodshot Records (previous LP, 2020’s Daughter, was released via their own Honey, You’re Gonna Be Late Records), and was called by American Songwriter, “One of the most powerful, moving and musically sophisticated offerings in a career that is clearly still growing despite, or perhaps because of, any self-doubts.”  The album documents Loveless’ struggles with booze and depressi ..read more

“We’ve always had the approach to play every show like it’s your last night alive,” Sam Quartin, guitarist and vocalist for garage punk act The Bobby Lees, tells me during a recent phone chat.  That is, unfortunately, now more relevant than ever, as the band recently announced, via their Instagram and Facebook accounts, that their currently scheduled shows – which include a stop at our very own MilkBoy this coming Tuesday, November 21st – could be their last.  The post – which can be read in full here – addresses how, because of streaming platforms like Spotify, it has become nearly ..read more
