Most people are aware that dental implants are an excellent solution for replacing missing teeth, whether it is a single tooth, several teeth, full upper arch, lower arch or both. As implants can be a considerable investment for many people, one of the questions we are most often asked is: how long do dental implants last? Do you (or someone you know) have a bad habit of biting your fingernails? It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that it’s bad for your oral health, but how exactly? Some of us regularly put off going to the dentist. We may have good intentions, but, like changing your oil, reviewing your insurance cover, or cleaning out the pantry, it’s all too easy to delay and you can suddenly find that a surprisingly long time has passed since your last visit. For most people it is recommended to see your dentist for an annual check-up and x-rays (unless there are dental issues that need to be monitored more often). Dental hygiene appointments have become increasingly popular in recent years with the valuable role they play in preserving your oral health and your denti ..read more

McIntosh Dental Blog

A recent story in the UK media has highlighted the important role that dentists play in detecting mouth cancer. The story was about a 60-year-old English woman who had been suffering from a persistent sore throat for a number of months. Because it was winter, she dismissed it as being normal for that time of year. But she mentioned it to her dentist at her routine dental check-up, who told her there was an area of ulceration on one of her tonsils and advised her to see her doctor. This was the beginning of her diagnosis of mouth cancer – a journey which included life-saving surgery and radioth ..read more

Winter sports are here, and now is the right time to look at custom-made sports mouthguards for you or your child. Everyone who plays a contact sport should wear a mouthguard to protect against mouth injuries and trauma. An alternative to over-the-counter mouthguards that you heat up and mold are custom-made sports mouthguards. Although custom-made sports mouthguards are more expensive initially, they can be worth the extra investment. Not only do they last for a long time, but they are also far more comfortable to wear because they are custom fitted to your teeth and gums. They fit you perfec ..read more
