I haven’t found one yet, but I’ve heard there are recipes for eating crow. I wish I could find a good recipe because I’ve been eating my fair share of it lately. Every year during legislative sessions we hear of bills that come up that make us raise our eyebrows. This year has been no exception. Recently a bill to change the classification of bear in Wyoming from a trophy game animal to a large carnivore game animal was sent to us and here was my response before understanding what the bill was about: I’m 100% against this BS. Hunters giving way to the anti’s in this leads to them pushing for ..read more

Montana Hound Hunting Bears: Good or Bad?
Eastmans' Blog » Bear Hunting
by Todd Helms

The 2021 Montana legislature passed HB 468 to allow the hunting of black bears with hounds during the state’s spring bear season outside of occupied grizzly habitat.  This decision has come with challenges and questions from both hunters and state wildlife biologists and managers. Is hunting bears with hounds “fair chase”? Will this new practice have too much impact on black bear populations? Can spot and stalk and hound hunters “get along”? These questions and more are facing Montana bear hunters as we move closer to the spring black bear seasons.  Please bear with me while I set u ..read more

GUEST AUTHOR: Brian Clintworth Hunters in Washington have just lost their Spring Bear season for 2022, but hunters everywhere should take note as the anti hunters will see this as a victory and look to further their agenda across the nation.  Last month the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Commission had a tie vote when approving the 2022 Spring Bear proposals.  Because of the tie vote, the hunt has been put on hold while the commission decides what to do.  Let’s look at what caused this outcome.   Spring bear seasons across the nation have always been ..read more

Spring bear season is upon us in Montana and there are a few new things to keep in mind. The big news from last year is that running bears with hounds is now legal so be sure to keep that in mind for the non-houndsman that are out there hunting. Hound hunting season is April 15 – May 25th and hound training season is May 26th – June 15th. Hunting season dates haven’t changed. Hound hunters must have a valid black bear license or a Class D Hound license. Hound hunting for bears is illegal in grizzly country which includes Region 1 and many other areas including the east side of Glacier ..read more

As I have written about in the past, the pressure that the hunters put on the Commission to reinstate the spring bear hunt resulted in a special commission meeting on Friday, January 21st to consider the next steps to take.  There was a lot of back and forth between the various commissioners during this meeting in determining those steps.  On one side were the folks who clearly do not want a spring bear hunt and were willing to use whatever tactics or spin necessary to prevent it from happening.  On the other side were the folks who were more willing to listen to the sci ..read more
