CFL.CA STAFF TORONTO — The Canadian Football League lost a legendary presence on Saturday with the passing of coach Dave Ritchie. The 85-year-old spent time with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, BC Lions and Montreal Alouettes. He led the BC Lions to a Grey Cup win in 1994 and his 108 career wins are seventh-most in CFL history. Ritchie was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2022. An outpouring of love and support for Ritchie came from across the league over the weekend. By 3Down Staff -February 14, 2024 Legendary CFL player and multisport star Gerry James has passed away at the age of 89. The native of Regina played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1952 to 1962 and as a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1964. He recorded 994 carries for 5,554 yards and 57 touchdowns, was twice named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian, and won four Grey Cups. By Paul Friesen Published Feb 13, 2024 Former CFL legend Ken Ploen died in Winnipeg on Tuesday after a lengthy battle with dementia. He was 88. Generally considered the greatest Blue Bomber of all time, the former defensive back and quarterback was a four-time Grey Cup champion, one of the leaders of the franchise’s golden era from the late 1950s through the early ’60s. Thomas Nettles Obituary Tom Nettles always looked at challenges as opportunities. From his days as an undersized youth on the St. Patrick’s School playground teams in North Park, to a career of playing multiple sports, Nettles was a star. Tom was born at Mercy Hospital in San Diego and passed away at Sharp Hospital after a long illness. Kaser, a retired Sun Oil division manager who was a University of Toledo football standout and played professionally in the Canadian Football League, died Thursday in Kingston Residence of Sylvania. A native of Collingwood, Ont., who made Calgary his home after his football career, Dales played seven seasons (2005-11) with the Stampeders and was the West Division’s all-star punter on four occasions and a Canadian Football League all-star two times. Harry Holt a fomer CFL and NFL tight end, passed away at the age of 66; on November 24th as reported via a social media post by his high school. Holt was a football player in the CFL for five years and in the NFL for five years. Holt played tight end for the British Columbia Lions from 1978–1982, the Cleveland Browns from 1983–1986 and the San Diego Chargers in 1987.
