For the past few months I’ve been making a cosy new home online, somewhere I could dig into the question of how to live slow in a fast-paced world. But rather than just a blog, or a podcast where the conversation mostly flows one way, I found myself craving community. Connection. A place to gather with like-minded people, all seeking something similar - a different lens through which to view the world. It’s called The Tortoise, and it’s hands-down my favourite corner of the internet. It’s where I write weekly (often more) about life viewed through the broad lens of slowness. It’s also where I ..read more

Photo courtesy Marty O’Donnell @ MOD Photography North American and UK mates, I have some exciting, long-awaited news! My newest book, CARE: The radical art of taking time, is being released in your neck of the woods early next year and is now available for pre-order! UK release: January 5, 2023 Canada/US release: February 7, 2023 To be honest with you, publishing a book during a global pandemic was pretty tough. Usually I would have hoped to get a deal with a North-American publisher and maybe another with a UK publisher, and benefitted from the local marketing and distribution support tho ..read more

Well, you certainly know how to make a person feel loved. Thank you all for your kind comments and messages this week, after I posted about my slow return. I have read them all and let them fill my heart up in a way I haven’t really allowed in years. Coming back here, even tentatively, has felt like a homecoming of sorts. A return to somewhere familiar and somewhere new. I’m sure there’s a word for that feeling in another language but I don’t know what it is. I felt something resonate when I hit publish on my last post and felt it again every time I read one of your replies. At first, I thoug ..read more

I’ve written and re-written this (re)introduction more than a dozen times, trying to succinctly explain why I disappeared seven months ago. Trying to do so without going into detail. Without trampling my boundaries. Without tearing open newly stitched wounds. Turns out my writing tools are a little rusty. So let me start by simply saying thank you. Thank you for allowing me to step back. Thank you for your concern. Your kindness. Your emails and Instagram messages and letters. I have read them all, taken heart in them all, and responded to precisely none of them. My reasons for stepping back ..read more

Stepping back
Slow Your Home
by Brooke McAlary

Just a quick word to let you know I’m stepping back for a while. From this space, from the podcast, from anything public-facing. I don’t know when I’ll be back. I don’t know what any of it looks like moving forward. I just know that it is very necessary, and not apologising is proving very difficult. So I’ll just say that I’m so grateful for all the love and kindness and grace I’ve received recently, and please know I am sending it on to you. The truth is, I think we all need it right now. Brooke xx ..read more

What a year this week has been - A Hostful

Image courtesy of Marty O’Donnell Photography And so comes the end of another season of the poggie. It’s been an absolute pleasure to bring these conversations to you over the past couple of months, and judging by the feedback I’ve received from you, we’ve hit upon some topics that have resonated deeply. As always, we’re rounding out the season with a hostful chat - where Ben and I riff on things we’ve learnt, what we’re up to and what we’re working through in our own slow-living efforts. In this episode we talk about my new blog and newsletter (you can subscribe here) and my experience of tu ..read more

I struggle with the idea of enough-ness. Of being enough and doing enough. I often find myself asking questions like: Do I do enough fun stuff with the kids? Do I call my sisters enough? What about my parents? Have I been a good enough friend? Am I using my voice and privilege enough? Do I give enough? Do I care enough? Am I enough? I mean, it’s not like I’m aiming for the stars here, either. I’m merely hoping for enough. Not too little, not too much. Just… enough. Head over to The Tortoise (my blog/newsletter on Substack) to read the full post. And, while you’re there, you might like to subs ..read more

Bringing back the blog, baby!
Slow Your Home

Image courtesy Marty O’Donnell Photography Well friends, it’s been a minute between newsletters (approximately two years) and even longer between blog posts. (Six years, maybe?) But lately I’ve felt what can only be described as a pull. A deep desire to create and connect away from the BS games of algorithms and the ever-changing face of social media. Maybe it’s nostalgia. Maybe it’s because I’m getting older (I turned 40 a couple of weeks ago and yes, I have many Thoughts about that which will have to wait for another day). Maybe it’s a transition we’re all feeling two years into a glob ..read more
