Why Julie Bindel is Wrong About Sex Work
Jack Talks About Sex Work
by mxjackparker

Julie Bindel is a prominent figure among so-called “radical feminists” who oppose the decriminalization and destigmatization of sex work. In fact, she objects to full service sex work being considered to be work at all, preferring to conceptualize all prostitution as a form of abuse. The laws Bindel advocates for go against her stated goals of supporting and protecting those who sell sex. Sex workers are safer when we are not criminalized for working and our clients are not criminalized for paying us. Bindel’s strict abolitionist stance leads her to support the Nordic Model, which criminalizes ..read more

Self-Conscious Because of Clients

I want to say that what clients think about me doesn’t have an impact on my self-worth, not least because I’m usually not attracted to my clients anyway, but unfortunately it does get to me sometimes. Here’s a candid discussion about how sex workers’ self-worth can be impacted by the rates we charge, how many clients we get, and the image we need to present of our bodies to be marketable. Let’s say you are someone who is new to selling sex, who decides to start using online escorting websites to advertise your services. Your current income isn’t enough to support yourself on and you’ve done a small amount of sex work to bridge the gap, selling some pictures of yourself and seeing a couple of clients that you’ve made informal agreements with around trading sex for things you need. To work safely, you know that you should use a secondary phone. Lucky you, before you fell on hard times you upgraded your phone as a part of your contract and kept the old one. All you need to do is p ..read more

Hustling on Grindr

Apps or message boards which are built for the purpose of finding hook-ups have always been populated by a significant number of sex workers. As various sites become more hostile to the advertising of escorting services and to sexual content in general, a new generation of sex workers are using social media to find clients without explicitly stating that is their intention on their profiles. Grindr attracts queer people (overwhelmingly gay or bi cis men and trans people) who are intending to find clients, whether they’re looking for sugar daddies or to be paid for individual meets at an agreed ..read more

NPCC Sex Working Guidance

The National Police Chiefs’ Council has created sex work guidance e-book for the UK which is due to be reviewed via consultation starting on the 1st of April 2024 and to be finalized and issued by the 1st of August 2025. This is a breakdown of the current guidance, including criticisms from a sex worker perspective. Principles Principle 1 – “The sex industry is complex, often stigmatised, and has many evolving typologies. It is often hidden from the wider public. We recognise this environment is conducive to the abuse or exploitation of those selling sex.” This principle is a reasonable one, n ..read more

Clients Cancelling

A cancellation from a sex worker is a minor inconvenience to a client. The non-essential service they were seeking is denied to them, they keep their money, and they can book another sex worker or forego seeing one without any significant consequences. If a client cancels on a sex worker, that cancellation may be the difference between being able to afford food or rent. Clients cancel on me semi-frequently. There are times I get a text a few hours before a booking I didn’t want to go to, when the need for money isn’t urgent. Then there are times like this week, when a client cancelled on me wh ..read more

Hazbin Hotel: An Analysis on Sex Work Themes

TW: Discussion of sexual assault, including sexualized depictions of rape. I do not usually warn for individual articles, because my entire blog covers heavy topics, but I do not hold back from going in-depth in this article and rape/”non-con” kinks are a significant part of this discussion, with relation to sex worker characters in fiction. Also, there will be spoilers for Hazbin Hotel, obviously. As soon as Hazbin Hotel’s first season released on Amazon, I had multiple people asking for my opinion on the sex worker character within it and his story line. Angel Dust is a gay porn actor who is ..read more

Love Is Blind (and Whorephobic)

In the same way I half-watch many TV shows, I watch Love Is Blind by being present in the living room of my home and working on my computer when my housemate puts it on the TV. I catch parts of it, sometimes become invested for an episode before the premise frustrates me enough that I go back to my work, and the cycle repeats. Despite paying limited attention to the show, I hear occasional comments about sex work that draw me in. On the most recent season (6), Jeramey asks Sarah Ann, who he is on a date with, about her social media following. After she lists her number of followers on Instagra ..read more

Sex Work Slogans
Jack Talks About Sex Work

2M ago
If you pay any attention to sex workers’ rights advocacy, you’ll know that there are certain slogans which are used to draw attention to the movement and our demands. There are also phrases used by feminists in general who support sex workers, or more generic slogans also used to support us. Here’s a short breakdown of some of the more popular ones. “Sex work is work.” “Sex work is work” is a singular slogan to get across the basic idea that prostitution and stripping and performing in porn are all real jobs and that as workers we deserve workers’ rights. It is not the end of sex workers’ acti ..read more
