Remember your first mountain bike? We sure do. After several years as a kid saving up allowances and stacking up the piggy bank, I was finally ready to head down to my local REI. “When cruising around, we often get stopped by other moms/dads who are curious about our setup and how fun we make it look (especially if my son has his cool sunglasses on). Currently, we have a little mom and kid biker gang of about four other moms who bought e-bikes to ride with us.” Sounds like fun, right? Candide Krieger, a science teacher and mom in Honolulu, Hawaii, has fun like that just about every day on her e-bike. "I like to think that island life is slow and relaxed, but when you’re a single mom to a toddler it’s ‘go-go-go.’ That is one of the reasons an e-bike comes in handy. We ..read more

Hub v. Mid-drive Motors: Determining the Right Fit for You
Ebikes Hawaii Blog
by milo cho

One major element to consider when buying an ebike is what kind of motor to invest in.  For the most part electric bicycles come with one of two types of motors: Hub-drive or Mid-drive.  Hub-drive motors are found built into either the front or rear wheel, not integrated into the bike frame.  They work by spinning the wheel they are mounted on instead of driving the chain drive system, and can be found on city cruisers and ebikes that are for commuting and casual riding. Mid-drive motors are stationed in the center of the bicycle in between the pedals. They provide a low cente ..read more
