“It’s amazing how much they grow in a year.” Etonella Christlieb is a generous supporter of Center for Creative Education. At the start of the school year, she visited with the Flagler Rotary Club to serve as a guest reader in celebration of International Literacy Day. But Ms. Christlieb—or Ms. Etonella, as the second grade class calls her—did not want that first interaction to be her last one. She became a regular VIP reader, coming once a month to visit the second grade class. Each time, she brought an approved book to read and add to their class library, as well as a book for them to bring ..read more

Recently, Palm Beach Day Academy’s sixth grade class visited The Foundations School to forge new connections and celebrate the growing relationship between the two schools. When the students from Palm Beach Day got off the bus, they split into three groups and paired off with different classes from The Foundations School. From there, the students rotated between three activities. For the first activity, students played outside with the playground equipment that the Palm Beach Day sixth grade class generously donated to The Foundations School during the holiday season. For the second activity ..read more

Students at The Foundations School kicked off the 2023-2024 school year with a special project. In every grade, students created self-portraits using different techniques and styles that are appropriate for their grade level. The completed projects now hang on the walls around the school, including a wall dedicated to staff portraits! Kindergarten Kindergarten completed two projects. One group of students used watercolor paper to transfer colors from tissue paper. Then they glued back-and-white pictures of themselves over their colorful background.  The second group of students construct ..read more

At The Foundations School, we believe in using the arts as a tool to break the barriers of traditional learning. We use a method of teaching and learning called arts integration that weaves the arts into academics through project-based learning. The goal is to enhance a student’s understanding of both subjects. Recently, students embarked on a project that perfectly exemplifies arts integration. “The teachers were told not to plan anything for September 14th,” said Dr. Susan Wemette, Director of Arts Integration and Creativity. “No tests, no lessons, just come ready to have a good time. And w ..read more

Ms. Santiago’s second grade class recently showcased their academic, theatrical, and social skills when they prepared and performed a play based off a book they read in class. “This Is Our House” by Michael Rosen and Bob Graham tells the story of George, who builds a house out of a cardboard box on the playground, but finds reasons to exclude all his classmates from coming in. The students in Ms. Santiago’s class brought the book to life and performed it for the entire school. The process started with the second grade class reading “This is Our House.” They used their literary skills to ident ..read more

Ahead of the new school year, Center for Creative Education (CCE) and The Foundations School engaged in extensive professional development. Staff, teachers, and teaching artists all participated in activities that helped them connect with each other, rediscover their purpose, and understand their responsibilities to the organization and to the students they serve. CCE’s teaching artists, who work in our C.A.D.R.E. program supported by Prime Time Palm Beach County and with our students at The Foundations School, took part in a three-day event called Summer Institute. Held every year before the ..read more

The Foundations School officially wrapped up our first school year at our new campus on Thursday, June 1st. To celebrate the end of the year, families came for the third and final round of student-led conferences, seeing firsthand how their children grew academically and personally over the course of the year. After the conferences, families went to the cafeteria for hamburgers, hot dogs, and socializing. During the student-led conferences, families listened attentively as their children walked them through their portfolio of work. Students showed their families the artwork that hung on the w ..read more

Guest Reader Laura Rehnert reads “The Duck Stuck” with The Foundations School’s kindergarten class. With only a few months left in the school year, CCE is happy to report excellent progress in the reading scores of our students at The Foundations School. We started The Foundations School during the COVID-19 pandemic as a response to the literacy crisis plaguing our community. An average taken from three elementary schools closest to CCE’s campus in West Palm Beach shows that only 27% of their third grade students are reading on grade level. CCE uses our unique approach to teaching and learning ..read more

At The Foundations School, we celebrated Spring Break with wildly fun activities! Our week-long camp, open to any interested students, used Susan and James Patterson’s book Cuddly Critters for Little Geniuses as the foundation for curriculum about animals and the natural world. Each day, all the students’ lessons and activities were built around a specific ecosystem, such as the wetlands, the forest, the grasslands, and the ocean. Students started each day with a read aloud from Cuddly Critters that reflected the animals and ecosystem the class focused on that day. From there, students practi ..read more
