Alas, there was to be no repeat of last season’s quite wonderful result at The Ethiad. Instead, Manchester City earned a 1-0 win over a Brentford side who, despite spending huge periods of this game on the back foot (City with 25 shots and 70% possession), had their own chances to win this one. For The Bees, Thomas Frank chose to mix things up a little. Zanka came in for Nathan Collins, Wissa in place of Neal Maupay and Frank Onyeka for Mathias Jensen. They were changes that worked quite magnificently as, with total respect to those replaced, The Bees looked ten times better than against L ..read more

February is beginning to have an air of déjà vu at the Gtech for Brentford. Saturday saw another game against the pretenders to the title. Another game where the Bees dominated the opening half before being undone with the interval approaching. Likewise, another game where the opposition allowed us nothing. But enough about referee Michael Oliver. The yellow cards not shown to the visitors, resplendent in a shade described by one North stand observer as ‘Milka lilac’, were perplexing to say the least. Equally so the non-penalty awarded to Brentford after Andy Robertson ploughed through Iva ..read more

PREVIEW: Bees host title-chasing Liverpool on Saturday

Saturday lunchtime sees one of those fixtures that always gets the pulse racing. Brentford welcome Liverpool to the Gtech for a game that, historically, has only seen us up to our arm pits in excitement. The opening Premier League campaign’s see-saw 3-3 one in which Ivan Toney was denied a famous winner by the offside flag. Then, last season, the margin of our 3-1 victory could have been even greater but for VAR. Plus ça change. However, with this most maligned of systems coming to Brentford’s aid at a crucial point in our 2-0 win at Wolves last week, let’s not be too harsh. That game saw ..read more

What a quite wonderful difference having an extra couple of players can make. Brentford beat Wolves 2-0 at Molineux on Saturday, looking like a team transformed. It has been well documented (in Brentford, at least) how much The Bees have been decimated by absentees for huge swathes of the season. Yet suddenly that challenge feels like it is nowhere near as grim as earlier in the campaign when even Buzzette was getting perilously close to making the match day squad. The returning Ivan Toney has hit the ground running. He looks fitter than the proverbial butcher’s dog and sharp as a knife. T ..read more

Brentford travel to Molineux on Saturday for a fourth game with Wolves in little over six weeks. It is a run which includes the FA cup replay and subsequent extra-time reverse aswell as the 4-1 home defeat suffered by The Bees in December. That is the one that Thomas Frank and his team will be seeking retribution for. Whilst the result will, as ever, have been put behind us it was one that came at the height of the absentee crisis with the remaining squad members perhaps also feeling the effects of playing so often without respite. Fast forward to the present and the Bees team pretty much ..read more

Nick Bruzon shares his Brentford player ratings after the Bees went down 3-1 against Manchester City at the Gtech on Monday evening. Another wonderful evening under the lights ended in disappointment for The Bees as Manchester City did what they do to so many teams. Despite Neal Maupay’s 20th-minute strike to give Brentford the lead, there was to be no third defeat of Pep Guardiola’s team. Instead, a hat-trick from Phil Foden was sufficient to wrap up a 3-1 win that now sees the League Champions two points off the top with a game in hand. A game that takes place in a fortnight with our ow ..read more

Brentford welcome Manchester City to the Gtech on Monday still smiling over the fact that they were the only team to do the double over City last time out. Nick Bruzon previews. Monday night sees the toughest fixture in the Premier League calendar. A game where last season’s record-breaking goal scorer is likely to continue his resurgence and pick up where he, and the team, left off. Toughest, for the visitors that is. Record-breaking for the Bees c/o Ivan Toney. Brentford welcome Manchester City to the Gtech still smiling over the fact that they were the only team to do the double over Ci ..read more

Brentford’s latest visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium saw a 3-2 reverse after a pulsating fixture where both teams went hammer and tongs for the victory. In the end, a ten-minute spell at the start of the second half saw Spurs turn a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead. There are no complaints. Brentford gave as good as they got on pitch, in footballing terms. Probably better than Spurs when it came to football’s dark arts. Neal, the master, taking apprentice Ivan under his wing as the pair of them teamed up for the opening goal and a subsequent moment of triumph to match. Maupay bundling home ..read more

Wednesday night’s trip to Tottenham sees Brentford as close to ‘normal’ as Thomas Frank’s team have been in what feels like an eternity. Nick Bruzon previews. The absentee list continues to shrink with Ivan Toney the latest high-profile name to return. His performance against Nottingham Forest last time out showed just how badly he was missed at the front end of the season. Whilst his goal and the manner of Forest’s subsequent bleating (surely something designed as much to cover up their own woeful attempts to defend his free kick) dominated headlines, it was as much Ivan’s all-round perfo ..read more

In a game that was only ever going to be about one man, Ivan Toney not only ripped up the script but rewrote it in his favour to be even more incredible than we could have ever imagined. A 3-2 win for Brentford over Nottingham Forest had us all celebrating yet it was as much the manner of the performance and the way the team took their goals which will live on in the memory. First and foremost, Ivan Toney. Spoiler alert – he wins the star player award for this one. That’s a surprise anybody with even half an eye on the game would be able to predict. He was magnificent and despite all the a ..read more
