Swaylah Faroqi pops up on my laptop screen. Her video background is a stock image of a gorgeous apartment with panoramic views of a city skyline. She apologizes for not showing her real background which, she confesses, has piles of clothes scattered all over her bed and a half-unpacked suitcase on the floor.
“I'm leaving in three days and I just got back from Mallorca,” she says. I ask where she’s off to next: “The States to see some relatives and to go to a wedding, then Todos Santos and Cabo. I’m also going to Thailand an ..read more

Maybe it was Miranda Hobbs, the successful lawyer from Sex and the City, who was a pop-culture emblem of navigating a relationship with someone who made less money than her. A more recent example is Fair Play, where characters Emily and Luke, two coworkers at a cutthroat investment firm who are secretly dating, find their relationship dynamics shaken after Emily's big promotion. And there’s Sabrina Carpenter's latest song, "Please Please Please," where, despite her partner being equally successful, she still fears that he could publicly embarrass her.

Our favorite romantic comedies lied to us. They convinced us that meeting the love of your life would happen in the most swoon-worthy, serendipitous way possible. In Before Sunrise, Celine (Julie Delpy) meets Jesse (Ethan Hawke) on a train to Vienna. That never happened when I was on the Eurail. In You've Got Mail, Kathleen Kelly (Meg Ryan) and Joe Fox (Tom Hanks) are anonymous pen pals who meet in an AOL chat room and they turn out to be bookstore rivals who fall madly in love. Ugh, I wish I had a hot rival. And more recently, in Anyone but You, Beatrice (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell ..read more

I have asked men out more times than I can count—digitally, that is. When I was single, I threw DMs out there like little power-up Super Mushrooms in Mario Kart.
If I saw a hot person on TikTok who lived nearby, I would leave a flirty comment on one of his videos, or find his Instagram and use a slightly cheesy but totally charming pick-up line. Most went unanswered, but I didn’t take it personally. They were strangers, so it was low-stakes and never that serious. One time, I even slid into an Olympic athlete’s DMs (and we talked for a bit, then it was a mutual ghosting situation).

I saw a tweet once that described going back to dating apps as the equivalent of opening your fridge every two hours only to realize you’re not hungry for anything contained within.
But hating on dating apps in the summer of 2024 feels a little easy. There’s so much fodder—the ghosting, catfishing and dead-end dates with mustached firefighters who tell you their favorite film director is Vincent Gallo. It’s all such low-hanging fruit that it may as well be touching the earth.
The apps seem to be paying attention to their users’ frustrations and trying to address the major concerns ..read more

We know, we know: Dads are hard to shop for. What do you get a man who either already has everything or has such specific interests and hobbies (hello, building model airplanes) that the chances of getting the wrong thing are high. But while you may be stressing about which gift to get Dad this year, we’re here to remind you of a very important aspect of a good Father’s Day gift: the card.
If your mind immediately goes to a gift card—we’re here for it. If you pick the right retailer like, say, the store he visits every single ..read more

Your purchases hold a lot of power, so why not support Black women (and their businesses) while you shop? You were in need of a new pair of tights, a refill on your matcha and some new perfume anyway…

The Versatile Bodysuit
The La Vie Bodysuit, Oma the Label, $57
A bodysuit is a true essential. In our books, it rivals the perfect white T-shirt for wardrobe classic status. But finding a good one is about as hard as finding the perfect white tee. The La Vie bodysuit is like the going-out-top’s older sister: dramatic and attention-pulling, but sophisticated and elegant. Just add some hig ..read more

“Wow, you must be really hungry!” ”Don't eat that, you'll get fat." “I could never have that many carbs.” These are just some of the eye-roll-inducing, unsolicited comments women get when fuelling their bodies (and minding their damn business)—in the corporate lunchroom, at the dinner table with family, and yes, even from strangers.
But we’re here to focus on eating at work—and why you might feel self-conscious noshing on your sad desk salad in front of your coworkers. So, we consulted Colette Heimowitz, M.Sc., Atkins’ resident n ..read more
