Flight to Manzanita Arizona Surveying was asked to help in the development of the new Ribbon Falls replacement bridge after the original timber and galvanized steel truss bridge failed. The original bridge spanned 78 feet over Bright Angel Creek and connected the North Kibab Trail to the Ribbon Falls trail. Arizona Surveying sent Bretton Luckow and Bryan Martin to the Ribbon Falls Bridge site for a topographic survey of the area so engineers could use the data gathered to build a replacement bridge that could be dropped into place via helicopter in the exact location of the original bridge. https://youtu.be/xQkIb8zfaQk The Trans-Canyon Pipeline was built in the late 1960’s and supplies all of Grand Canyon National Park’s drinking water. From its source at Roaring Springs on the North Rim, water travels 15 miles through an aging pipeline to reach the South Rim of the park. Over the past decade the pipeline has suffered numerous leaks, fissures, and breaks. Full replacement of the TCP is currently estimated at around $150 million. “Guaranteed water to the South Rim is in peril as long as we have the existing pipeline and infrastructure in place. If we don’t have that, then everybod ..read more

Again, the crew of Arizona Surveying (Bretton Luckow, Levi Nash & Bryan Martin) went back into the Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP), this time to complete the topographic survey of 1.5 & 3 Mile Rest Houses on the Bright Angel Trial. This experience was different than their first trips into GCNP, as the park was now open to all visitors with Covid restrictions lifted. The crew of 3 started by making 2 trips into GCNP to complete a Static GPS Observation Network at both locations using Trimble R10 GNSS Receivers. After collecting data at both locations, it was then processed through the ..read more

Grand Canyon National Park (GCNP) is one of those unforgettable places that can change a person’s life. More than six million people enjoy its sublime vistas every year. Water is a natural feature of the park, most noticeably the raging Colorado River as it cuts its way through the canyon’s ancient landforms and winds through the southwest desert. But water is also the park’s lifeblood, allowing visitors to safely and comfortably enjoy the park. GCNP is one of America’s most popular natural attractions, but without a safe, reliable water supply, it would be unable to accommodate so many visito ..read more

This project was an excellent example of Arizona Surveying’s ability to think outside the box and provide the client with a mapping solution that saved time and reduced cost. One of the project’s tasks was to establish right of way location for the approximately 12-mile-long portion of the Hopi Arsenic Mitigation Project (HAMP) regional water system that runs along SR264 on the Hopi Reservation. Establishing the ROW required analyzing a combination of existing survey monument locations and the actual physical location of the roadway as defined by edge of pavement. Arizona Surveying knew that a ..read more

We’re based in Flagstaff but like our name implies, we serve the entire state of Arizona. For this project we provided survey control to support LiDAR mapping of a 100+ mile section of a 161 KV transmission line between Parker, AZ and Yuma, AZ. Most of the powerline access traversed rugged desert terrain. Arizona Surveying recovered three existing NGS control points to use as a foundation for the survey. Found and set control points were occupied with GPS base receivers and post-processed using the NGS’s Online Positioning User Service (OPUS) for positional verification or establishment as app ..read more

2019’s Museum Fire burned 1961 acres of timber on the steep slopes of Flagstaff’s Mt. Elden. Due to anticipated risk to the Forest and public (including the potential for severe flooding and debris flows in Flagstaff), a BAER (Burned Area Emergency Response) team was assembled after the fire to identify risk and make recommendations to mitigate. Part of the team’s recommendations included installing a total of five Cable Woven Articulating Concrete Block (ACB) water crossing structures at critical drainage crossings located on Forest System Road (FSR) 557 (Elden Lookout Rd). These structures w ..read more
