It’s the 4th month of our Old Dog Haven 20th anniversary blog series and this month we focus on our staff because they are truly one of the reasons why ODH is so successful. I could just give you names and titles and  tell you that they’re all wonderful, but I think a glimpse at one day in the lives of our staff members may give you a better idea about their dedication and skills as they work long hours for our dogs. As she’s drinking her first cup of coffee for the day (and sometimes before) our Vet Services Director/Dog Manager Judith Piper is on the phone talking to a representative ..read more

Our Foster Families: The Foundation of Old Dog Haven

As we enter the third month of our year-long 20th anniversary celebration, I’d like to talk about our foster families because they’re one of the many reasons why ODH is successful. We couldn’t do what we do without our foster families. It’s just that simple. Even the best intentions about caring for homeless senior dogs fall short if there are no homes available for the dogs that would benefit from our care. Fortunately for the dogs that need us, for twenty years people have stepped up to provide loving permanent (Final Refuge) homes for senior dogs ..read more

Our Mission Is Clear

This is the second in a series of 12 blogs celebrating Old Dog Haven’s 20th anniversary. Last month I focused on our dogs and this month I want to talk about the importance of our mission as it relates to our success. In 2004 when our founders Judith and Lee Piper saw that shelters were filled with homeless, old dogs, they knew that something like Old Dog Haven was needed. Judith said, “Somebody needs to do this. Dogs just can’t be abandoned at the end of their lives. We could do this.” And they did. How often have you heard someone say “Someone needs to d ..read more

It all started with Kelsey . . . . 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of Old Dog Haven! Not only is this is a remarkable achievement for a regional nonprofit organization but we’ve become the largest senior dog rescue of its kind in the U.S. To celebrate this significant anniversary during the course of this year each month we’ll present a blog that focuses on the answers to this question: What is it about Old Dog Haven that makes it so successful?  Why are we still able to help so many dogs twenty years after opening our homes and hearts to homeless old dogs? Before I talk about the answe ..read more

New foster, Sarge tells us about his Old Dog Haven journey and why our #GiveBIG fundraiser is so important to dogs like him! Hello to old dog lovers everywhere! My name is Sarge and my tail can’t stop wagging because I am so excited to share the news that I am officially an Old Dog Haven final refuge dog. Last month, I found myself alone in a very crowded shelter and just because I am pretty old and have some health problems, I was worried I would never find a home. The shelter was full and they said it was urgent that they find me a safe place to go. What I didn’t know was that Old D ..read more

Ivy is an Old Dog Haven dog that came to her Final Refuge home almost two years ago in dreadful shape as you can see below. In just a few months, with excellent vet care, lots of love, warm beds for daytime naps and a big bed where she sleeps with her mom, dad and two poodle sisters at night, this girl blossomed into a healthy and very happy pup. She is so grateful to Old Dog Haven that she wanted to send a message about the Maranda Fund (and Calendar Release) Celebration to you all. (Photo: Wendy Giberson)     “Greetings everyone! I’m not good at using a keyboard (the lack of thos ..read more

What it’s like to foster an Old Dog Haven dog Old Dog Haven stands on the foundation of our foster families. If we feel that an old dog is unadoptable due to medical or other issues these are the wonderful folks that bring these dogs into their homes for the remainder of their lives. Old Dog Haven pays for the vet care for these dogs, but fostering seniors brings unique challenges and joys to a family. At Old Dog Haven we hear a number of questions about fostering. So here are the stories of some of our longest term fosters. Perhaps their experiences will answer questions, nudge some of us in ..read more
