Hello. Today, the polarized light technique is known to everyone. So two crossed polarizers. Some amateur compensator. And between them there is quite a lively Paramecium. The polarization effect can be seen quite clearly from the beginning of the second minute. Regards Maciej iframe Statistics: Posted by MASZEK — Tue Dec 05, 2023 11:20 am ..read more

There are three facts not in evidence: (1) that it is plastic, (2) that it came with the product, (3) that whatever it it is unsafe. M&M will send in their goon squad of lawyers if you post accusations like that. LOL. That big M&M seems nice, but I'd image he is a bruiser. "Lets science, shall we?" Is it fluorescent? Fibers with strong blue fluorescence generally indicate the blueing agent from laundry detergent e.g. its dryer lint. Get a UV-B light an you'll observe that every square inch of your house is covered in fluorescent lint - you'll even find it floating in the air. You are ..read more

Exquisite! Congratulations on managing to rotate the focal diatom! Oh, I did not rotate it. I managed to find a second specimen that was oriented differently. Once coated in gold, it is difficult to rotate the diatom without making a mess. That's why I was so impressed that you did it. I didn't consider that you might have two of them. Very engaging image, as always. Great stuff. Diatom-related debris doesn't look anywhere near as interesting under my scope! Thanks Beatsy, the depth of field and resolution of the SEM helps of course. Statistics: Posted by hkv — Sun Dec 03, 2023 9:54 pm ..read more

Agreed, those are fantastic images. Do you have an estimate for the size of the big diatom? Around 100 um in length Statistics: Posted by hkv — Sun Dec 03, 2023 9:50 pm ..read more

Personally I like the debris. It gives a certain sense of reality to what might otherwise look like CGI illustrations. (Overheard in a flower shop: "They look so perfect they could be artificial!") --Rik That is the drawback with SEM images I think. It is easy that they become CGI like. Especially since some artists color them in vivid and bright colors that is far from the original colors they have under a light microscope.
