As spring practice concludes, Sherrone Moore and Michigan still adjusting
The Michigan Daily » Football

On Monday, during Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore’s final press conference of the spring, one phrase stood out: “We’ll see.” This offseason has brought waves of change and uncertainty for most — if not all — of the Wolverines’ players and coaches, but perhaps none more so than Moore. In just three months as Michigan’s head coach, Moore has navigated a coaching staff overhaul — featuring multiple legal issues — as well as extensive roster turnover. He has no clear-cut starting quarterback. One of his star returners and leaders suffered a major injury during spring practice. He lost his ..read more

Kendrick Bell and receivers show early development in Spring Game, room for added depth
The Michigan Daily » Football

A player with the last name Bell catching passes for the Michigan football team? That should ring, well, a bell. Former standout wide receiver Ronnie Bell may have moved on to the NFL two years ago, but his brother — sophomore wideout Kendrick Bell — is keeping the name alive within the Wolverines’ receiver room. And in Michigan’s annual Spring Game, Kendrick showed early progress toward following in his older brother’s footsteps. “His development this spring was outstanding,” Wolverines offensive coordinator Kirk Campbell said. “He’s a playmaker. He can go get the football, he has probably t ..read more

Davis Warren stays cool under pressure at Michigan Spring Game
The Michigan Daily » Football

Davis Warren rolled to his right. With senior defensive lineman Ikechukwu Iwunnah bearing down on him, the senior quarterback took a step back, set his feet and fired. He hit sophomore wideout Frederick Moore perfectly in stride, leaving him plenty of room to cut across the field and up the sideline for a 48-yard touchdown — Warren’s second passing one of the game. Tallying 136 yards and two touchdowns on 6-for-9 passing, Warren took advantage of the Michigan football team’s Spring Game on Saturday and turned in the best performance of any quarterback on the day. Michigan asserts physical run identity in Spring Game
The Michigan Daily » Football
by Rekha Leonard

Starting off all but two drives of the Spring Game with a run play, the Michigan football team’s offensive identity was no secret. The Wolverines reaffirmed their physical ground attack with both the Maize and Blue teams relying heavily on the run. As a multitude of unknowns continue to swirl around Michigan’s offense ahead of the 2024 season — most notably the ongoing quarterback battle — that identity is the foundation of the Wolverines’ game plan. “We’re gonna be a downhill physical run football team,” Michigan offensive coordinator Kirk Cambell said. “That’s not going to change — (it’s) o ..read more

The Michigan Daily » Football

Rod Moore knew the potential that lay ahead of him this season. The safety knew that by returning to the Michigan football team for his senior year, he set himself up to take on a key role for the Wolverines. From the moment spring practices began, Moore embraced that role. He drew praise from his teammates for his leadership and elicited comparisons to former Ravens All-Pro safety Eric Weddle from Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. He was primed to quarterback the defense and serve as a cornerstone in maintaining the high standard set by previous Wolverines defenses. But then Mo ..read more

Colston Loveland stepping up as focal point of Michigan offense
The Michigan Daily » Football

Colston Loveland is a well-known offensive threat for the Michigan football team. He let the “cat out of the bag” with a tricky performance against Rutgers, burned Indiana with a career-long 54-yard catch and tore up Michigan State with two touchdowns. Former coach Jim Harbaugh even compared him to Travis Kelce ahead of the Big Ten Championship game against Iowa. And he did all of that as a sophomore last season. Now in his junior season, the tight end is expected to be one of the top players for the Wolverines, if not in the country. But with that great power comes great responsibility for L ..read more

Using lessons from Mike Sainristil, Semaj Morgan looking to lead by example in young receiver room
The Michigan Daily » Football
by Lys Goldman

Semaj Morgan might only be a sophomore, but he’s the elder statesman in the Michigan football team’s wide receiver room this year. Behind former receivers Roman Wilson and Cornelius Johnson, Morgan took on a substantial role in the Wolverines’ offense and special teams last season. He appeared in every game at wide receiver and all but one as a kick or punt returner, notching 204 receiving yards and four total touchdowns. The then-freshman burst onto the scene early, and his role only grew as the season progressed. This upcoming fall, though, Wilson and Johnson won’t be around anymore. Morgan ..read more

‘Duck’: Tony Alford adjusting to other side of Michigan-Ohio State rivalry
The Michigan Daily » Football
by Noah Kingsley

When new running backs coach Tony Alford first decided to jump to the Michigan football team after nine years with Ohio State, plenty of thoughts likely swirled around his mind. How the opportunity could help him and his career. What he can bring to the Wolverines. What it would be like to be on the other side of The Game come November.  But above any of those other thoughts, a more urgent message of what he had to do first permeated through:  “Duck,” Alford joked Wednesday.  Alford was being facetious, but it reflects the ire that switching sides in one of the most ferocious r ..read more
