Lake trout are a species some anglers visiting northern Ontario for the first time may not have ever fished for. Lake trout are a native species to the province and are also one of the larger sport fish out there. Some anglers use a contraption called downrigger to get these fish, but there is some extra rigging involved. In my estimation, the best way to appreciate the feeling of a large lake trout putting the brakes on a bait is to go old school. This means using weights, large lures and some medium to beefy rods. There is something supremely satisfying bait catching trout this way. Here is ..read more

Mojikit Channel Lodge   The 42 mile long Ogoki Reservoir feeds into Mojikit Lake through the Mojikit Channel. The channel runs for more than half a mile and has very strong current at all times; this makes for excellent walleye action. In this fishery you will find most walleye in the 21-22 inch range and there’s many opportunities to catch pike over 40 inches. The inlet of the channel has a series of rocky reefs, which are prime areas for fishing. One of the best is directly across from the lodge, at the outlet of the channel into Mojikit Lake. Mojikit Lake itself has many islands and wa ..read more

Lake Superior’s Changing Fishery by Shawn Perich   The fish population of Lake Superior experienced extraordinary changes over the past 100 years or so. New technology allowed for the capture of fish at greater rates than the native harvesters, which had survived on fish for thousands of years. As transportation improved, it became easier to transport Lake Superior fish to larger markets. During the same era, non-native fish species entered Lake Superior, some i ..read more
