From LDN to NCL, UK rap legend Giggs brought an all-star cast from the capital to Newcastle on the first UK date of his Hollowman tour at O2 Academy Newcastle. Tiny Boost, Ms Banks, Ambush, Sneakbo and the legendary Charlie Sloth all had the pleasure of warming up the stage for the man himself. This stacked line-up gave the show a sense of occasion, Giggs was determined to make it a special one.  Introduced by the DJ as ‘The Future’, Peckham rapper Tiny Boost’s set left a lot to be desired. Boost didn’t seem to be up to the task of opening the show with a bang. His vocals were incoherent ..read more

Track of the Week: “Drive A Car With Your Eyes Closed” – Jack Fox

We’re breaking the rules a little bit with this Track of the Week. It’s not hip-hop, or even rap, “Drive A Car With Your Eyes Closed” is Jack Fox‘s spoken-word call to arms. Originally released in 2018 as a part of Jack’s ‘Seriously Butterflies’ EP, the track quickly became a fan favourite with amazing responses whenever it got performed live. Imagine the famous ‘Choose Life’ speech Ewan McGregor gives in Trainspotting, the one that gets put on posters, but it’s put to music. That’s the best way we can describe it. It’s inexplicably motivational, rabble rousing, witty, simply a listen that in ..read more

EP Review: “Valley Of The Ash Trees” – Just B

If you’ve clicked this review you probably already know a little about Just B. The Ashington based rapped is widely considered to be one of the best in the North East at what he does. He’s gained a reputation for his razor-sharp flows and brutally honest lyricism that often depicts the worst parts of life in England’s poorest region. Many would label Just B simply ‘the best grime emcee in the region’. A great title to have, but when everyone comes to expect the same thing of you how do you keep it interesting? You reject that title. You show them you don’t fit into that neatly carved out box ..read more

Live Review: Ocean Wisdom gives a lesson in lyrical force at Newcastle Uni SU | 25/11/19

Ocean Wisdom invaded Newcastle University’s student union with a lyrical force so powerful that by the end of the concert the crowd had developed a collective repetitive strain injury from constantly shaking their heads.  Wisdom walked onto the stage humble and chill from the start and dripping like a stylish rainbow in a colourful North Face. Rapper and personal hype man Sleazy F kept the energy high throughout the concert, rapping and dancing alongside Wisdom whilst expertly maintaining gas levels. The set felt more like a relaxed house party with Sleazy F, the cameraman and the DJ sip ..read more

Track of the Week: “Both” (Headie One Remix) – Listaa

Listaa has made his name as one of the most respected artists to come out of North East in recent years, with solid projects like ‘PiSC3S’ and ‘Calm’ making him a leading name in Sunderland’s hip-hop and grime scene. However, the SR5 spitter’s releases have been sporadic in 2019, leaving us wanting more much more from him. Surprisingly Listaa’s output has spiked over the past week, dropping two tracks out of the blue. His brand new single “Showtime” debuted on BBC Introducing in the North East, followed up by a remix of drill superstar Headie One‘s hit single “Both” being dropped on Facebook ..read more

The New Queen of North East Hip-Hop? | Abi Nyxx Interview

Abi Nyxx is a name that you might have seen floating around your timelines recently. She’s one of the freshest faces in the North East hip-hop scene, seemingly appearing out of nowhere this year to snatch the crown as queen of the mic.  Turns out Abi literally comes out of nowhere, well… Alnwick to be precise. A small market town in Northumberland famous for its gardens – not its rappers. After seeing Abi’s videos amass thousands of views online, higher numbers than some of the most popular artists in the region, I had to find out more about the unassuming barsmith. Dragging her 34 miles ..read more

Track of the Week: “Mpath” – Eyeconic
Ride Music Blog » Hip Hop & Grime
by RIDE MUSIC
4M ago
Already racking up thousands of streams, “Mpath” is one of the strongest releases to-date from Teesside based artist Eyeconic. Since coming up on grime in 2017 with energy-filled bangers like “Spit One Lyric” and “Lewandowski”, Eyeconic has been hell-bent on breaking out of boxes and experimenting with any genre he’s feeling in 2019. “Mpath” taps into Eyeconic’s grunge influences with a simplistic yet atmospheric guitar riff that provides the backbone of the track. The verses are filled with melancholic self-exploration, punctuated by dark trap hi-hats and cavernous drum kicks ..read more
