To listen to Dr. Runge share his thoughts about our Vision, click on this video What I love about our vision is that it encompasses all that we do – research, education and clinical care, and everything in between. It also recognizes the contributions of all of our faculty, staff and learners who have a role in achieving our mission to advance health to serve Michigan and the world. This past March the leadership team developed a Long Form Vision to give everyone a sense of the big picture view of our vision – from supporting a state-wide network through our far-reaching partnerships to our c ..read more

Last month, we opened a new mobile mammography unit at the Ypsilanti Health Center, which greatly benefits the community by bringing breast cancer screening to the Ypsilanti area. The open house was well attended and appreciated by all, but what many may not have realized that day was that the small mobile unit represents something so much bigger. It is the first phase of a full-scale effort to offer equitable access to care, expanded health care and community programs, with a special focus on addressing health disparities in the Ypsilanti community. The existing Ypsilanti Health Center itsel ..read more

In January we announced a partnership with the Sparrow Health System which will strengthen our ability to provide quality health care to Lansing and other communities beyond southeast Michigan. We anticipate final closure on our agreement in March. The agreement will build upon U-M Health’s current statewide clinical network, which includes University of Michigan Health-West, MyMichigan Health, Chelsea Hospital and several innovative collaborations with Trinity Health. This growth will help us realize our vision of creating a premier statewide system of highly coordinated care, while expandin ..read more

Guest Blog by Debra Weinstein, M.D. Executive Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, Medical School Chief Academic Officer, Michigan Medicine A new calendar year always prompts both looking back and looking forward.  This mindset has led me to reflect about graduate medical education (GME), which had been my principal focus for many years and is one of Michigan Medicine’s outstanding gems.  Our GME residency and fellowship programs retain many of our outstanding students, lure other top medical school grads to U-M, and provide a pipeline of talented and dedicated physicians to the facu ..read more

Early Lessons from the Healthcare Equity Consult Service Inequities in our health system existed long before COVID-19, but the pandemic taught us that we had to address them now. One step in that direction is U-M Health’s new Healthcare Equity Consult Service, launched in August 2022. The service accepts consult requests from faculty, staff, patients, and families who feel that the patient’s care may have been affected by bias, inequities, or perceived discrimination of any kind. The Healthcare Equity Consult Service is also part of our UM Health BASE Strategic Priorities for FY 2023 to impro ..read more

M2C2 Capacity Center: Increasing Access & Building a Better Patient Experience

I am not the most tech-savvy person around, especially in this era of constantly evolving and improving technological innovations. But one doesn’t have to be a tech expert to appreciate how technology can help us collaborate to become more efficient while making a difference in the patient experience. That’s why I was so excited to hear that the M2C2 Capacity Operations & Real-Time Engagement Center will open at the end of this month in University Hospital South. The center gives us a very precise glimpse at our capacity, including the moment when we admit and discharge each patient. It a ..read more

Reduce Burnout. Let’s Build a Better Workplace.

While disappointing, the data provided by our Vital Voices engagement survey confirmed what we were all feeling.   For two years, our increasing concerns about our workplace have been lurking in the background, enormously compounded by the widespread challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. But let there be no question – this did not all start with the pandemic. The pace and challenges of working in healthcare date back at least a decade. Healthcare-related burnout was recognized long before COVID-19 arrived. For many years it was seen as a personal problem, even a sign of weakness, whi ..read more

PROTECTING OUR YOUNGEST AGAINST COVID-19

As a physician and a grandfather of three young children, I am heartbroken when I look at our daily COVID-19 census numbers and still see two or three children on that list nearly every day. The good news is that parents or guardians can now get children 6 months through 5 years of age vaccinated with the FDA-approved Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines to better protect them from COVID-19. But having available vaccines is only half the battle – the harder part is convincing parents and guardians to use this excellent and necessary protection. To date, vaccination rates for children 13 years ..read more

June – the month when the lazy days of summer are just beginning – is far from lazy for us here at Michigan Medicine. To add to our already heavy workloads, June is traditionally the month we complete our professional evaluations, and also hear our Vital Voices engagement survey results, followed by action planning. These important annual events are designed to support our employees’ professional growth and build strong teams. Yet they require a time commitment and extra work in a single month, which can add more pressure in these days of stress and burnout.  After some thoughtful discus ..read more

I think we can all agree that health care work is hard, the hours are long and the average workday is fast-paced and ever changing. The global pandemic has re-affirmed this to the world, and because we have experienced this challenge together, we all know how important recognition can be – even if it is a quick thank you or a simple pat on the back. We also share a common motivation. Whether we are nurses, technicians, physicians, supply chain workers, administrators, or hold any of the other varying roles within our organization, we all want to make a difference in people’s lives. When we wo ..read more
