As incredible as it sounds, the insanely intense, nearly century-old Yankees-Red Sox rivalry was brought to an even higher level of animosity — some might say absurdity — in the spring of 2008 when a rabid Boston fan tried to put a hex on the Bombers to make up for all those years living under the Curse of the Bambino.
As construction crews were busy building a brand new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx across the street from the old one, one worker deviously decided to counteract the Yanks’ perennial postseason luck by secretly dropping a magic charm into a vat of wet concrete: a David Ortiz souve ..read more

The Puerto Rico’s Day at the Ballpark event series kicks off its 2024 season on April 25, 2024 when New York Yankees starting pitcher Marcus Stroman will be honored before the game against the Oakland Athletics at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
The Puerto Rico Convention District Authority (PRCDA) has officially signed on as the presenting sponsor for this year’s lead-off event, which will be followed with on-field ceremonies in Tampa on August 16 and Minnesota on September 15.
Puerto Rico’s Day at the Ballpark pays tribute to the island’s rich 125-year baseball history dating back to 1898, and ..read more

Baseball in Latin America — and the fan fervor for the game — goes back more than a century. But it’s in the winter when the fun really heated up as MLB players from stars to scrubs —including plenty of future Hall of Famers — would head to the sunny climes of the Caribbean to keep their skills sharp.
Click on the photos for a look back at how baseball was played in Puerto Rico.

It’s easy to forget Alex Rodriguez was a pretty good shortstop before being traded to the Yankees, but he wasn’t a bad third baseman, either.
On this day in 2010, A-Rod and the rest of New York’s infield made a dazzling play look easy, pulling off a perfect 5-4-3, around-the-horn triple play against the A’s in Oakland.
In the bottom of the sixth inning with the A’s leading 4-2 and C.C. Sabathia on the mound, Rodriguez, playing close to the bag with runners on first and second and no outs, fielded a hot-smash grounder, stepped on third for one out and threw a strike to Robinson Cano at se ..read more

No one realized it then, but April 16, 1975 was the last time baseball fans would get to see a baseball giant’s trademark high leg kick and whipsaw delivery.
On that day, right-hander Juan Marichal put a cap on his 16-year Hall of Fame career when he appeared in his final game — for his longtime rival Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dominican Dandy, 37, who won all but five of his 243 victories with the San Francisco Giants, had signed with the Dodgers before the start of the 1975 season after a mediocre year with the Red Sox.
It was a stunning move, considering the decades-long rivalry between ..read more

The influx of players from the Dominican Republic in recent years has certainly changed the face of the Major Leagues, but professional ball goes back more than 100 years in the baseball-crazy country.
The following vintage photos — culled from the archives of famed Dominican baseball historian Emilio “Cuqui” Cordova, who died March 7 at age 90 — are a rare look back at the history of the game in the D.R., which fielded some great teams and boasted countless excellent players, many of whom would have been MLB stars if not for the color barrier.
And much like the winter leagues in other Carib ..read more
