On a rainy night in the Scottish capital, the beautiful Voodoo Rooms hosted two sets full of immense talent. From the moment the music began, it was difficult not to get transported into a new world of genre-fusing and mood-changing tempos. North Orbital Scottish quintet North Orbital were the first to take to the stage in the intimate venue. Adding to an ever-growing list of hometown shows, this support slot was another intriguing opportunity to boast a variety of musical talents. Their talent and maturity shone through when one of their guitarists encountered an issue with a broken guitar st ..read more

Gig Review | Casey Mcquillen @ The Classic Grand

Personally, I love seeing the first European and UK headline shows of international artists and I’ve had the pleasure to witness a bunch but this show felt a lot more personal. Casey, being already an established artist in the USA and opening for multiple big artists in Europe and the UK, shared that she was really comfortable being the opener, but tonight was different for her as it was her first headline gig of her headline tour and it was a really special moment. There was no high stage, no restrictions for photography and no barriers and all of that made the show feel free flowing, intimat ..read more

Review | The World of Hans Zimmer @ OVO HYDRO
Discovery Music Scotland
by theolgabow@gmail.com

The show really lived up to it’s name. The minute you step into the venue and take your seat, you can feel the magic in the air. It was made even more magical when the music, lights, costumes and interactions with the audience had all came together. Even though Hans wasn’t there he still managed to make the show personal to him, by occasionally popping up in a pre-recorded video on the big screens behind the stage, telling us stories of certain movie tracks, particular creative methods he used and what had inspired him for certain musical patterns. For example, Hans mentioned that the famous m ..read more

GIG REVIEW | TOO RED | THE OLD HAIRDRESSERS 13.04.2024
Discovery Music Scotland
by Daniel Boden

Being in a two piece band can be really hard work. With the absence of a bass, second guitar, maybe a synth, you’ve got a big job to do trying to fill those musical gaps and frequencies. Too Red filled out the sound with ease. The riff happy duo played their EP ‘Way Out’ in its entirety and did not miss a beat. Eve Davidson dawning her true to brand, cherry red Gibson SG, played hard hitting, hammering riffs, with a deep fuzz sound ringing from the stage. Emily Irving played cool, calm and collected always on point with tight technical fills, keeping on top of the backing track which sway ..read more

On the 5th April, Be Charlotte released another fantastically fresh track, further carving her path to stardom. Defiant, determined, and staying strong: ‘This Is Not a Goodbye,’ is a courageous pop anthem that sounds like taking a stand for yourself. With lyrics which speak to the hearts of many who are amid difficulties in their own lives, and an upbeat, sunny tempo, listeners are left with a resounding impact of aspiration. “Sometimes, it’s difficult to know whether something has truly come to an end and other times that decision is taken out ..read more

Discovery Music Scotland
by Morgan Hermiston

‘Hold On‘ is Former Champ‘s first single since the release of their debut EP “Vol. 1” in January of this year. The Glasgow based quintet fuses foundations with an Irish singer fronting a group otherwise made up of Scots. The supergroup includes members from bands including Savage Mansion, Secret Motorbikes and Catholic Action. Accompanying Irish vocalist Claire McKay on this catchy and memorable tune are Ryan Clark, Andrew MacPherson, Paul McGinness and Craig Angus. Live music seems to be one of Former Champ’s many talents. Along with the creation of captivating musical material, the band have ..read more
