INTERVIEW: ‘THEM: The Scare’ Cast Talks The Power of Horror
But Why Tho?
by Kate Sánchez
4h ago
From creator Little Marvin, THEM is a Prime Video original horror anthology that looks to take social realities and tell horror stories with them. The second season of the series, THEM: The Scare has shifted time periods away from 1950s Compton and to 1990s Los Angeles. A crime noir thriller that mixes in supernatural and slasher horror staples, this season is just as intense as the last but is more focused on who it’s telling its story to. We spoke with the THEM: The Scare cast, including Deborah Ayorinde, Luke James, and Joshua J. Williams. THEM’s second season focuses o ..read more

REVIEW: ‘A Condition Called Love’ Episode 4 — “Our First Shrine Visit”
But Why Tho?
by Allyson Johnson

After the standout Episode 3, A Condition Called Love Episode 4 returns to more patient pacing. That said, while the first half meanders and casts Hananoi (Chiaki Kobayashi) in an unflattering light, the second half picks itself up. Based on the manga by Megumi Morino and produced by East Fish Studio, the series still needs to develop its supporting cast to level up to some of the all-time shoujo greats. But “Our First Shrine Visit” at least offers up some significant character development between Hotaru (Kana Hanazawa) and Hananoi. The first half of A Condition Called Love Episode 4 primaril ..read more

REVIEW: ‘Them: The Scare’ Vastly Improves On Season 1
But Why Tho?
by Kate Sánchez
14h ago
I wasn’t a fan of Them’s first season. The potato sack scene broke something in me, and the series never aimed to repair that or make it make sense. Them: The Scare, the second season of the Little Marvin created Prime Video Original series, is just as mean but with a different perspective informing it all. It leaves you just as uncomfortable, but for vastly different reasons that make it better than the first season. Set decades after the first season in 1991 Los Angeles, Them: The Scare centers on LAPD Homicide Detective Dawn Reeve. Embodying the noir thriller aesthetic before it ..read more

REVIEW: ‘Boy Kills World’ Gets Lost In Its Gimmicks
But Why Tho?
by Kate Sánchez
14h ago
Brutal action, vibrant cinematography, and a stellar score should be the makings of a top-tier actioner—but Boy Kills World gets lost in the genre. Directed by Moritz Mohr and written by Mohr, Tyler Burton Smith, and Arend Remmers. Boy Kills World has a pretty stacked cast with Bill Skarsgård, Yayan Ruhian, Andrew Koji, Famke Janssen, Jessica Rothe, Isaiah Mustafa, and Quinn Copeland. The film follows “Boy,” a man who has vowed revenge after his family is murdered by Hilda Van Der Koy (Janssen), the deranged matriarch of a corrupt post-apocalyptic dynasty. Orphaned, deaf, and voiceless ..read more

REVIEW: ‘City Hunter’ Does Action-Comedy Right
But Why Tho?
by But Why Tho?
21h ago
Netflix Original film City Hunter adapts the legendary manga City Hunter by mangaka Tsukasa Hojo. The film proves again that live-action adaptations work when the heart of the source material is honored. In the film, we follow Ryo Saeba (Ryohei Suzuki), the number one “sweeper” of the Underworld. Fun and action-packed, Saeba pummels and investigates his way through modern-day Shinjuku with his best friend’s sister, Kaori Makimura (Misato Morita). If the title seems familiar, it’s because this isn’t the first time the manga has gotten the live-action treatment. The first came in 1993, with Jac ..read more

REVIEW: ‘Shōgun’ Season 1 Is One Of The Best New Series Of 2024
But Why Tho?
by Kyle Foley
1d ago
Based on the 1975 novel of the same name by James Clavell, Shōgun re-adapts the novel with a larger focus on the Japanese people and culture that make up the core of the story. Created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, Shōgun is a masterfully done adaptation and a lesson in storytelling for future television series. Shōgun follows the story of Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), who aims to unite Japan after the death of the Shōgun. Toranaga is a member of the Council of Regents, a group of five leaders who rule the nation until the Shōgun’s heir comes of age. The Council is led by Lor ..read more
