Current building to close this Summer as Board develops plans for new museum fit for the future, in more prominent location

The Jewish Museum London wishes to congratulate His Majesty King Charles III on the occasion of his coronation on 6 May.
His Majesty has been Patron of the Jewish Museum London since 2008 when we became His Majesty’s first patronage of a Jewish Community organisation with a remit in the United Kingdom. This long standing relationship reflects King Charles’s deep commitment to promoting and preserving British Jewish Heritage and the Jewish faith.

As part of my Collections Placement work at the Jewish Museum London, I have been assisting in the audit of the museum’s sizeable collection of prayer books. I have examined scores of sidurim and machzorim from all around the world and from centuries apart, printed and handwritten, leather-bound and adorned in silver. One could be forgiven then for passing over a rather nondescript Anglican Book of Common Prayer, yet on closer inspection, this book testifies to a remarkable story.

These objects tell the stories of the lives of Jewish people past and present, including those who are members of the LGBTQ+ community. Some of those narratives may be hidden to us, however this blog explores those objects from the collection that explicitly reveal the experiences of LGBTQ+ Jewish people, beginning with this booklet published in 1982.

Jewish Museum London is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Edgar Samuel, former Director of the Museum from 1983 to 1995.
During his time as Director, Edgar Samuel transformed the Museum displays and exhibitions and oversaw the relocation of the displays to Camden Town. We are deeply grateful for his dedication and years of service to provide for the future of the Museum. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.

To celebrate the opening of our Community Learning Kitchen, our current residences are all food related.
Our first stall has been co-curated with Jewish Museum London’s own Learning Officer, Eliana Mendelsohn, and Engagement Programme Manager, Emma Crew. Jewish Museum London ended 2022 in style as a key recipient of the prestigious Heritage Education Trust’s Sandford Award for excellence in museum learning in 2022. In an virtual ceremony on 7 December, Dr Tracy Borman CEO of Heritage Education Trust awarded the Museum with an awards certificate for the excellent museum learning programme, along with other award winners around the UK. The Jewish Museum London is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Lord David Young of Graffham. Lord Young of served as the Chair of Trustees at the Jewish Museum London from its re-opening in 2010 until 2020. During this time Lord Young firmly established the Museum at its new home in Camden, and led the Museum through countless major exhibitions and vibrant public events.
Lord Young dedicated himself to the Jewish Museum, alongside working for this company, sitting in the House of Lords, and serving many other charitable causes.

Sue Shave has been appointed as Acting Director for Jewish Museum London from 1 November 2022 after the departure of the previous Director Frances Jeens, who is now Head of Education and Engagement at UK Parliament.
