This employee retention speaker and employee retention expert has always struggled with patience when driving but I am working on it. That being said, I noticed how incredibly impatient other drivers are when I was coming home from a breakfast meeting. Then I stopped at the grocery store on the way home. I noticed the impatience of one of the department managers in action. I got thinking about how this department head probably was increasing her employee turnover by her lack of patience.
While this employee retention author was coming to the door, this particular depart ..read more

This employee retention speaker and employee retention expert believes in being proactive with employee retention rather than waiting for talent to be out the door before taking any action. Unfortunately, that is not the way most organizations handle employee turnover…they react! That’s where stay interviews come in. the key to stay interviews is you have to get the employee you are speaking with to open up. This employee recruitment expert has found the best way to do that is to ask, “Aside from money…why do you stay here?” I like asking it this way because often ..read more

If you think mental health issues and other issues like alcohol, drug, gambling etc. have not impacted your workforce…you are the one that is crazy!!! People are more stressed than ever and are finding non-medical ways to address the issues. Most of those are not positive. This employee retention speaker and employee retention trainer has seen this situation at several clients. When people are struggling, often they quit thinking things will be better in another organization or they become dysfunctional themselves and they need to be dealt with. If not addre ..read more

What this employee retention speaker and employee retention expert found appalling was that there was little talk of motivating people. It was as if people are supposed to come to these organizations and be highly motivated. These employers need to recognize young people are different and must be motivated. Is that the way it should be? No…it’s not! However, it’s the way things are in today’s world.
Instead of bemoaning the fact that the new workforce is different, it’s time for leaders put effort into motivating these young people. Two of the organiza ..read more

Recently, this employee retention speaker and employee retention expert had the opportunity to visit one of my clients. The President has always been a proponent of collaboration. This philosophy has held them in good stead for many years. He even created a space for collaboration in his facility. People can come and relax on comfortable chairs, drink coffee and chat. They maintained this even during the pandemic for those people who continued to work in-person vs. virtually. He has noticed that as all of his people have returned to work this area has worked ..read more

When this employee retention speaker and employee retention trainer showed up at the facility to have his colonoscopy done, I was informed I had the right time for the procedure but the wrong day! I suspected it was my mistake and I immediately thought of all the fun I had prepping for the procedure…I’m joking…I immediately thought…OMG…I have to do the prep again in a couple of weeks. Then, one of the staff came out and said she was going to try to get me in at another location because she knows how nasty the prep for the procedure can be.
She called the other facility and based on ..read more

This employee retention speaker and employee retention author has recently observed some things in training sessions I’ve conducted, in meetings I’ve attended, my personal behavior, and just in life in general when it comes to cell phone usage and the distraction and disconnection we often see as a result. This has a serious impact on employee engagement, employee retention, and culture building. I have seen a few organizations deal with the distraction of cell phones very effectively.
The reality of the situation is we are CONSTANTLY on our cell phones! We are l ..read more

As an employee retention speaker and employee retention author, rules drive me crazy. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in rules because they promote an environment where people don’t abuse each other and add a semblance of order. But rules are not the best way to Create a Culture C.R.A.P. (Caring, Respect, Appreciation, and Praise). The best way to Create a Culture of C.R.A.P. is to articulate the positive behaviors you expect. It’s far better to tell people the behaviors you want than to tell people what behaviors you don’t want from them. Rules treat people like ch ..read more

This employee retention speaker and employee retention trainer was intrigued by listening to one of the foremen in the workshop. This foreman was a gruff, crusty old leader who had been with the organization for over 25 years. On the surface that is what came through. Then, as we got brainstorming in small groups, this employee retention expert got to listen to his ideas as he worked in his breakout group. The ideas he came up with were amazing!
He talked about how he sat with his crew EVERY morning before they went to the job site. He had actually created an area ..read more

This HR Leader began talking with this employee retention speaker and employee retention expert because she was at a loss to deal with an interesting case of nepotism. In this particular case, she has a department in her organization where there is a toxic employee who creates turmoil and divisiveness in the department. The problem is this toxic employee is related to his boss’s boss. With the clout of a higher-level person in the organization to protect him, he is able to act in a toxic manner.
This toxic employee engages in gossip, and innuendo about co-workers’ performance ..read more
