The Inexorable Grind of Life
Etherea Magazine

So I have started writing this post multiple times, in a multitude of different ways. There have been attempts at humour, attempts as a story, a letter, even getting ChatGPT to write it for me (boo, hiss!). Straight off the bat, don’t worry, I am not dying, nor is Etherea vanishing. We are however changing our Modus Operandi. Instead of being a monthly magazine, we are now transitioning to quarterly (well, duh, says the people who see the last issue was from January). We will no longer be taking subscriptions via the website, it will all be directed through Patreon. The individual covers for s ..read more

Old is new again! Or is it not recycling, but upcycling? I don’t know, but either way the people have spoken and Etherea Magazine is now accepting reprints (stories that have previously been published elsewhere). This is due to multiple factors: Great stories are made to be shared in more than one place Authors can get paid multiple times for their art Etherea will be longer – benefiting readers Reprints are cheap (the greasy rag whose fumes Etherea runs on gets a mild reprieve) Another not insignificant reason is that the attrition rate of online magazines is ridiculously high. I am certai ..read more

Etherea Magazine and the Cover that Never Was

There is so much joy to be found in creating the cover of Etherea Magazine (and indeed, also in choosing the story art for each submission) You spend hours flicking between sites, examining all that they have on offer. An assortment of keywords are searched (it pays to be ridiculously specific), and images are added to a growing collection of “possibles”. Then comes time to whittle this list down to just a couple, and you study them intently. You almost have to try them on for size, see how they are sitting on the shoulders, or whether they are uncomfortably tight across the belly (well this m ..read more

Welcome, one and all to Etherea’s inaugural Spooky Issue! Fittingly published on Hallow’s Eve, a time where the walls between the seen and unseen tremble and crack. Who knows what will be able to reach through these pages? Who knows what is watching from the other side? Well, in all honesty, probably no-one (but never say never!). In case you didn’t notice, we publish Science Fiction and Fantasy, so a toe dip into the macabre is about as far as we are going to take it. It would probably be a bit of a betrayal to the subscribers to have an issue solely dedicated to horror and the like. (We do t ..read more

This week a small part of Science Fiction became reality. In the vein of ‘Armageddon’, and to a lesser degree ‘Don’t Look Up’, humanity took its first steps in establishing a Planetary Defence System. For those who aren’t aware, on Tuesday (27th September 2022), NASA completed the final steps of the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) Mission. Basically, the essence of the DART Mission is to ram a spacecraft into an asteroid at excessively high speeds, and see if it causes the asteroid to change direction. No mean feat, considering the target is only 170 metres wide, the spacecraft is trav ..read more

It’s hard to believe that Etherea has been going for an entire year, but here we are! In many ways, it comes as a bit of a shock to me. Partially because a year could have been the far side of the Moon, for how attainable it felt, and partially because it arrived so quickly. There is a lot of truth in the adage of “just one step after the other”. I’d love to say that I have kicked all the goals that I set out to achieve this year, but the truth is, there is still quite a lot left to be done. The anthologies sit, waiting to be compiled and published.   The paperbacks sit, waiting to be su ..read more

No writer is an island. (Nor, for that matter is an editor) Etherea (who does he think he is then, talkin’ about hi’self not only in the third person, but by the name of the magazine?) had the good fortune to attend the Aurealis Awards this year, and we had the most incredible time. We were able to put faces to names that we only knew from emails, or social media. Everyone was so welcoming, more than happy to stop by and have a chat, and the variety of people in attendance was vast. SFF is for everyone, and it was truly on display at the awards night. As I am sure that you are aware (the major ..read more

The Etherea Family is growing! It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Nick Petrou to Etherea as a First Reader. Nick is an accomplished writer, podcaster, and copywriter from way over West (depending on your geographical point of view). Nick, as you will of course remember, had his excellent story “A Necromancer Need Not Be Evil” published in our March Issue. If you are interested in more of his work I would highly recommend listening to his Podcast – Spinning Yarns with Nick and Paddy. In other exciting news, we have reached double digits! Yes, this latest issue of Etherea that you now ho ..read more

Happy New Year! It has been quite a while since I have given an update to the site, and the New Year seems like a perfect time to do so. Like a young teen in love who keeps track of such things, we will soon be hitting our six month anniversary. It doesn’t feel like half a year has passed, if I am being honest. That said, I swear it was only yesterday that I was lamenting on passing out of my teens, let alone my twenties. The gears of time keep turning, and the inexorable march of hair follicles from the top of my head to my shoulders continues. Anyway (yes, the previous paragraph was a weird ..read more

I would say that I am fairly capable storyteller, and a confident enough public speaker for the thought of entertaining a crowd to cause only mild consternation. So when I was invited to be on Myth and Magic, a Podcast for authors hosted by the amazing Neil Mach, I jumped at the chance. All I have to do is talk about the Magazine and myself, how hard could that be? Turns out, hard hard. Neil had kindly sent over a layout of the questions he would be asking. I initially read through them, and was rather confident in my abilities to answer each one coherently. The day of the Podcast arrives, and ..read more
