The members and volunteers at the Garden couldn’t be more delighted to have received recognition for the work put into the Community Beds Project over the past two growing seasons. The Garden’s Vice Chair accepted the Communal Gardening Award given by the Wicklow County Counci at their 2023 Community Sustainable Development Awards held March 2nd, 2024. It’s great to be back outside in the fresh air and bird song at the garden. This March the goldfinches were spotted having a field day despite the soggy weather. Community gardeners old and new are getting their beds ready and early plantings in for a jump on the growing season. Our recently awards Community Beds Project is off to a new start as well. We have rotated to a different bed than last year to grow spuds and add some red onions as companions. We will soon plant mangtout which does well in cool conditions. A strength of our membership and our garden is our willingness for community partnership. Last year, in collaboration with Shoreline Leisure Greystones, we planted three beautiful beds in our garden to grow organic vegetables for donation to those in need. The way we do things… adding raised beds means welcoming new members from our backlogged waitlist and for us, it is such a shame to see people wait for such an amazing, sustaining, and health-giving community amenity. The Greystones & Kilcoole Community Garden covers a relatively tiny 0.12 acres (0.05ha) of Council property. The garden was founded over a decade ago. Hello gardeners. It was another glorious yet challenging year for both community and gardening. With Covid raging through our second season since reopening, we found ourselves grateful for this lush space and the health and sanity we drew from it. We currently have a very full waitlist which really breaks our hearts as we know there is a massive shortage of community gardens and allotments in our area. Oh, 2020. You frightening beauty. A difficult year in so many counts and ways. Despite Covid lockdowns and pandemics, the garden managed to have its “grand reopening” with a full membership. We have finally finished the construction of 24 new raised beds. Each bed is filled with certified organic compost from mulch.ie. Special thanks goes out to Greystones TidyTowns for bringing in some brawn to complete the heavy manual labour. While the garden is now officially opened we do still have work to do. We are excited to have finished the carpentry work for 24 raised beds at the new community garden. There are still openings for new members to don’t wait any longer to reserve one for yourself. Gardening should begin sometime next week. Let’s get dirty! Membership Details Tuesday we will receive a large shipment of special peat-free certified organic compost. We will fill the beds with this luscious stuff. The spacious 3 foot wide paths will also be covered with sheet mulch and wood chips to keep weeds at bay.
