Springtime is here and the garden is ready to party!
So much to do at the garden in spring!
We had a low-key but bustling workday today. We focused on prepping our compost, planting donated tomatoes (thanks Ty and Dan!), weeding, and harvesting!.
Tomatoes for everyone! Remember, smaller varieties tend to do better in our area.
It’s just about the last average frost date, which means it is time to start thinking about your spring—and summer!—plantings. Plant your tomatoes deep to give lots of room for roots to develop before the heat.
Thank you to our dedicated compost crew!

February is a rough month for gardening, but we have so many enthusiastic gardeners, it’s easy!
Welcome to the garden!
It was cold but we focused on the basics—adding compost to our plots, adding mulch, and cleaning out the shed. It was long overdue, but we had an excellent cleaning crew!
Cleaning out the shed
February tis a great month to plan ahead. Add compost, turn your soil, and plan out your strategy for the coming year. Remember slow-growing crops like potatoes can have big yields but take up space from now to June, where short crops like radishes are a quick turn and leave space for se ..read more

Happy new year of gardening, and welcome to some new and returning faces!
The Compost Queen’s triumphant return!
It was a chilly day, so we focused our morning on PLANS! We talked about how to plan your individual plot as well as plans for the garden as a whole.
Share your ideas! One plan is to replace our weather-damaged sign. We are also looking to purchase a variety of seeds to supplement our seed donations. Got another idea? Come prepared to tell us about it! (Or message or chat us on the group chat!)
Look at the healthy crop of gardeners we have!

Welcome to our first garden workday of 2023! Saturday, January 14th, from 9-11 am.
Last month, gardeners reserved their plots…don’t miss out, if you want the same plot as last year, let us know. (Preferably, by being at the workday) plots are still only $35.00 for one, $70.00 for two. (Cash or check made out to NorKirk Presbyterian) We will be collecting money, but if you can’t make it to this workday, let us know…and we will catch you later.
We will be dismantling the old sign, discussing new signs, replacing a faucet, and planting onions and potatoes. (If you find any…bring them)

We made it through the cold once again…time to assess the damage. You can pull off the blankets and frost cloth…leaving them on too long can also cause problems.
We had one faucet that had some damage…I put a drip hose on it to funnel some of the water into the Asparagus Bed, until we can replace it.
It still drips, but most of the water is going into the Asparagus bed ..read more

Hard freeze warning: Thursday-Saturday this week with low temperatures expected down to 11 degrees Fahrenheit. I recommend harvesting anything that is close to being ready. Even the cole crops (cabbage, broccoli, kale, etc…) will be damaged without protection. Root crops should be okay with protection. No chance at all for, leafy greens like lettuce or swiss chard, and snow peas…harvest what you have.
To cover your plants, use old bedsheets, burlap, blankets, white spun row cover. We have a limited amount of the frost protection covers made of dark green material. You can buy more at Lowes, o ..read more

We put our blood, sweat, and tears into the garden—sorry about that scratch, Christina!
Next month’s meeting is very important—please be sure to attend so you can continue your plot or opt to switch!
What a beautiful harvest basket!
We had a great group out today and perfect winter gardening weather!
No need to water on a rainy day!
We focused on garden maintenance today. We pulled up dead plants, tidied up our beds, and added mulch to the paths. Special thanks to the Young Men’s Service League for turning the compost!
Thanks for the fresh compost
