Hello,
What does my performance on competitive programming contests show about my software engineering abilities? If I’m not a good competitive programmer, can this suggest that software engineering may not be the career for me? How reflective is competitive programming of the career of software developers?

Hi, I’m a HS freshman looking to go into pure math as an undergrad.
Currently, I have a 4.0 GPA, 1570 SAT, and USAJMO qual.
I want extracurriculars that can make me competitive for universities such as MIT, Caltech, CMU, HYPS, etc., but I found that it was quite challenging to get EC’s, especially research.
Is it possible to do any meaningful research under a prof. in math as a HS student? If yes, what fields would I have the best chance in actually understanding the work?
Aside from research, what other things can I do? I applied to Ross and PROMYS, and I’m waiting on the results. The eas ..read more

I was just looking at reddit for UBC and a thread about “Pirate CS311” caught my eye. Apparently UBC was having trouble with staffing some CS courses, so students discussed putting together a DIY course. A link in the Pirate CS311 thread led me to this student news article: Computer science classes cancelled, unavailable due to lack of instructors
I have also heard about CS staffing crises at all types of other schools, as different from one another as UC Berkeley (videos here and here) and Reed (student letter here).
Is this a problem everywhere? How widespread is it? How much is it affecting ..read more

Hi All,
I’m applying Yeshiva University and I have the following options:
3 year BA program: BA in Computer Science
4 year BS program: BS in Computer Science with concentration in Data Science & Machine Learning with a minor in Finance or Management (Strategy & Entrepreneurship)
**My main question: What would a Minor in Management paired with 4 year BS computer science concentration in Data Science and Machine Learning signal to employers VS. a Minor in Finance **
After completing either program do a Masters degree in Machine Learning or in Quantitative trading.
I’m interested in cre ..read more

I read somewhere online that “if you’re CS program is in the school of engineering, you can count the number of hours of sleep you get in one hand.” From other things I’ve read, that seems to be the case. I’ve heard that engineering majors are among the most difficult and it’s hard to have a social life or go partying regularly if that is your major. What are your thoughts?

I saw a post about this recently and I would like some clarification/advice - I’m going to college for comp sci and I was wondering if having a minor in like idk, electrical engineering compared to like, italian is better for finding a job, or if minors are just kind of a learn-something-you-want-to-learn kind of thing.
I want to minor in something- I’m interested in data analytics, electrical engineering or maybe italian and I don’t know if there’s job benefits to minoring in DA or EE vs italian, which for me is just kind of for fun and to continue studying italian (im in ap italian rn) so if ..read more

My Daughter a Junior High student, is aspiring to be in the computer science field. She sees her parents and feels she could be good in the same field as us! I am more in pre-sales and pre-sales leadership roles. She likes to focus on consulting, sales /pre-sales, marketing, and those kinds of roles instead of being a developer etc.
My question is what prgrams within comp Sci major she should be applying for? And what colleges would be good? We are based in Dallas, TX.
