What are the pros and cons of each? Chicago has some very good theorists (Razborov, Babai, Mulmuley, and several others at TTI), but they seem a little less active; while Austin has fewer but more active theorists (Zuckerman, Klivans), and an overall much larger department. How are the students at each? Which is more 'prestigious'/well-regarded (not sure how much it matters if I want to get an academia job afterwards, but just in case I decide I do not want academia in the end, prestige seems to be helpful in the real world ..read more

I typically lurk on the mathematics and statistics section of this website. I've been noticing recently that ML seems to be more housed in CS departments, while still drawing upon knowledge in stats, e.g. CMU's ML PhD has a couple courses on statistics as part of their curriculum.  The last two years, I worked in analytics while I earned an MS in Stats from a large state flagship, ranked USN top 50 in the field. Its March already, and I have read and re-read threads on things like "Your application is being reviewed by a small Computer Science committee" or "Be assured, you will be notified when we have a result on your application". I check my email every 15 seconds, have stopped believing in having dreams and get moody all the time. Hi , I am a final year undergrad pursuing B.Tech from a private college in India.
