Hello everyone, I have a bachelor's degree in social sciences from Asia (sadly had a rocky start during the first year and got Bs in some intro to programming & calculus I-III courses but did much better in latter years with an overall GPA of 3.5+). Later, I pursued a Master's degree in social sciences at one of the UCs in California (GPA 3.9+) with a full ride. During my Master's program, I took a lot of foundational courses in computer science and data science (linear algebra, discrete mathematics, data structures (Python), natural language processing) and received A/A+ grades in all of ..read more

Hello wonderful community! I'm currently knee-deep in the process of applying for graduate programs in Computer Science and could really use some insights from those who've walked this path. How did you make your application stand out? Any tips for crafting a compelling personal statement or resume? Choosing the right program is daunting—what factors influenced your decision, be it faculty, research opportunities, or location? And recommendation letters—how did you approach that? What should they ideally highlight? If interviews were part of your journey, how did you prepare, and were there an ..read more

Hi - I'm currently an undergraduate student in the UK at a Russell Group university, looking to apply to grad school in the UK and US for entry in Autumn 2024. I am currently deciding on what colleges to apply for, and am hoping I could get some recommendations of Computer Science programs based on my interests and strengths so I can make an informed decision on where to apply. I am studying BSc Cyber Security, which I hope doesn't disadvantage me too much when applying for pure CS courses. I have a vested interest in the subject, and my course does delve into a lot of mathematical and CS-y co ..read more

Hello, I’ve majored in Information Technology with a minor in Mathematics (taken courses like Linear Alg, DiffE, Real Analysis, etc). I'm a rising senior. I have a 3.6 major GPA and am interested in applying for MSCS and/or PHD programs, would I be competitive at all considering I have a BSIT and not a Bachelors in CS? Thanks ..read more

UChicago vs UT Austin for theory?

What are the pros and cons of each? Chicago has some very good theorists (Razborov, Babai, Mulmuley, and several others at TTI), but they seem a little less active; while Austin has fewer but more active theorists (Zuckerman, Klivans), and an overall much larger department. How are the students at each? Which is more 'prestigious'/well-regarded (not sure how much it matters if I want to get an academia job afterwards, but just in case I decide I do not want academia in the end, prestige seems to be helpful in the real world ..read more
