What’s the point in hiring a designer? Especially in a world where you can go online and gather a bunch of great ideas and read some helpful DIY blogs to create a design on your own. Not even going to get into this new world of AI. There are so many ways to “cut costs” when it comes to building or renovating and to be perfectly honest, working with a designer or architect may not be for everyone! It really comes down to what you value. The simplest way we can describe a designers value within the building process is we are trained to think creatively and understand how to work with people to e ..read more

Mistakes We’ve Made

We are celebrating re:Design’s fiercely 5th birthday this month and naturally that has us reflecting back on the good ol’ days and how we’ve got to where we are today. It might be more typical to share our success stories, but we felt it’s more interesting and/or helpful to anyone thinking about starting a design business to focus on the mistakes we’ve made along the way and how they’ve shaped us. It’s also an opportunity for anyone who has worked with a designer to see the other side of the coin! We look back and just shake our heads sometimes when we talk about some of the assumptions we ma ..read more

Hot Take On Trendy vs. Timeless
re:Design Blog

This might be one of our favourite hot button topics in design. Often, ‘trendy’ is seen as a dirty word to designers, whereas ‘timeless’ always seems to be the golden standard. Ever wonder why that is? We thought it was about time we share our perspective on it and how we deal with trendy vs. timeless designs in our studio! First, let’s pause and define what each term really means when it comes to design: Trendy designs typically have a faster phase-out than those considered timeless Timeless designs typically appeal to the masses and have longer life cycles as popular styles Just like i ..read more

Masonry Fireplace FAQ
re:Design Blog

Let us tell you the story behind this special fireplace! Sometimes you have the best of intentions to keep a part of history when you are designing something new in the place of something old. We love nothing more than integrating the new with the old when it’s possible! When we decided that the original cabin didn’t have “the bones” to justify a renovation and that it needed to come down to the foundation, we also decided that keeping the OG masonry fireplace was a must! We went as far as demolishing the cabin around the fireplace with the hopes to rebuild it, integrating it into the new spa ..read more

Our Remote Design

Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, there was a major shift to remote work out of necessity. Something you might be surprised to know about re:Design though, is that we were always a remote design studio when we started in 2018! It was one of the core strategies the company was founded on. Remote work promoted a work/life balance for us and allowed us the flexibility we needed to live our lives outside of work! We know many people are, and have been, skeptical about remote design so we figured we would share with you how we make it work and why it’s so successful for us! How We Got Here ..read more

Building a home from the ground up is a HUGE undertaking and investment. Not just because it takes an emotional and financial toll, but because it’s a hard and often overwhelming process that you want to make sure is done right…the first time! We are in the process of working on our fifth new build and we have learned many things along the way.  Though our design process fundamentally hasn’t really evolved, (why fix something if it ain’t broke) there are definitely things that have been adjusted to make the whole experience as smooth as possible, not just for us, but for our clients too ..read more

To curate a space is to carefully select each item with a purpose! This condo curation project took 2 years from start to finish! As the saying goes - good things come to those who wait! From the tedious process of narrowing down the perfect pieces, to industry delays with the pandemic and manufacturing/shipping issues, it was a patient process in assembling everything in this space. Curating a home is not just adding lots of stuff to fill a space. It’s handpicking items that work together to create a cohesive and well thought out collection that includes color, texture, scale, and flow.  ..read more
