Consonant blends are 2 or more letter sounds in a row. For example, some consonant blends include br as in brick, sl as in sleep, _nd as in sand, bl as in blossom, and spr as in spring. There are many consonant blends. Kids should read them sound by sound and then blend them together. Eventually, they’ll say the string of letter sounds rapidly enough to pronounce the word with fluency and ease. Here’s a free printable consonant blends words list: Consonant Blends Word List Reading Elephant offers printable consonant blends books in our shop. Kindergartners read slowly. I was teaching Greg, a 5 year old child, how to sound out consonant-vowel-consonant words like sat, hip and bam. As soon as he could read, he started sounding out decodable books. Greg elongated each sound just as I taught him: Sssss-aaaaa-mmmmm… Sam. This meant he said each word 2x: once to say the sounds, and another to blend the sounds together. Sam read 4 words per minute. Our printable phonics books help kids learn to read with a gradual, step-by-step approach. This may seem slow, but this rate is normal for a beginning kindergartner. Kids learn to read best with systematic phonics instruction. This means, kids should learn one phonics sound at a time. Kids also need explicit instruction. The teacher should tell students directly what each phonics sound says: ee says ee as in tree, for example. This has been described as the science of reading. However, the science of reading is more complicated and includes more elements. While systematic and explicit phonics instruction is critical, it’s not enough to get a child reading. Other elements of the science of reading have failed to hit mainstream culture and classrooms. On soc ..read more
