The lockdown hasn't made alot of difference to our household, except we can't go out for lunches, and I have the most terrible hair. It has grown about 1"since I last had it cut, and gone is the style I used to have. I shouldn't complain though because alot of people are in a much worse situation. I am so thankful I have my sewing that I love to do, and the time just flies. I was invited to join the making of a Mystery quilt hosted by the Adelaide Quilt Guild of South Australia. Thinking I had more things on the go that I needed to finish first, but being inquisitive, I joined up. I thought ..read more

Happy New Year from New Zealand

My first post for 2020.  The weather here today is fabulous, and very hot, for us anyway. At last our summer has arrived, but we are getting low on water, so have to start conserving. Catching buckets from the washing machine, and kitchen sink for the garden at least. You'd be surprised at how much waste water goes down the plughole in the kitchen sink! I have finished mainly hand piecing, with a little machining, Jen Kingwells  'The Avenue' and now have it pin basted for big stitch quilting.   I started handpiecing this quilt by making and drawing around templa ..read more

The time flies when you are having fun, so they say!  I sew almost every day which is so wonderful. I am very lucky having such a large space in which to do this, although I don't seem to have alot to show at the moment.  One thing I have finished is two cot/baby quilts for our new neighbours, who 8 weeks ago had a little girl.  They also have a 2 year old boy, so I thought I can't make for one and not the other!  I managed to buy a panel of a unicorn, and added some sawtooth stars made from my 30's stash.  I also pieced the back using the same stash cut into 5" squa ..read more

Many thanks to Lori from Humble Quilts, who every year organises a Doll Quilt Swap for those who want to participate! Its always fun anticipating the arrival of the quilt swap. This year my swap came from Melissa Devlin from Bothell, WA. It was lovely and I have shown the back as well which was very well pieced. Also thanks to Melissa who sent me a fat quarter of shirting fabric. It was very welcome, and I have used quite a bit of it already. Just what I needed at the time. Thanks for dropping by   http://www.susannasquilts.blogspot.com ..read more

Linda at flourishingpalms reminded me indirectly, to get on and post something. ? Thanks Linda for the push I needed. My latest finish is a quilt for my Son & DIL in Brisbane, Australia. I started this mid 2021, but have just finished it. I had my friend Judi Schon in Auckland machine quilt it and I love the circley design, we decided on.  The pattern was free, but I think it's a paid for pattern now. It is called Twirla by Butterfly Threads.  Back of the quilt  I made it larger than the pattern. The request was 100 " wide and 84 " length to accommodate the foot ..read more

As I write this I am still in Melbourne, having attended the AQC show. I have had a great time and a lot of walking, although our hotel was fairly close to the event. An absolutely beautiful old building called the Royal Exhibition Building set in Carlton Gardens.  Edit: I am home now, as it was too hard including my photos from the hotel.  Click on the photos to see the intricate work, especially the thread work quilts. Beautiful old building Here are some photos of the quilts that caught my eye ..read more

A 21st Birthday Gift

One of our dear grand-daughters has just had her 21st birthday and I decided it was time for a new quilt for her. She is an outdoorsy kinda girl, so I thought no frilly light colors for her. Her and her partner also live with their doggy child, so I thought something rustic would work. I purchased some flannel plaids and using the Oh My Stars idea from Pat Sloan, I made this quilt. I cut my squares bigger than Pat's pattern and also made the quilt quite a bit larger ( of course :) The quilt measured approx. 74"square   I cut my squares 6.5" Then worked out the sizes for my triangle ..read more

I have been slow stitching, by hand piecing this Trip Around The World  quilt for approx. 4 to 5 years. The squares were cut 2" square finishing at 1 1/2". After the first couple of 'rounds ' I decided to only use reproduction fabrics.   Many, many hours hand piecing  Choosing each new round.  I decided I wanted it square rather than rectangle so squared off each corner. It has 2371 squares and is approx. 75"square. At last flimsy finished and ready to go to Judi for basting! Thanks for dropping by  I am linking to Peacock Party ..read more

A few things I have made since I last posted. I had a 50th birthday gift to make.  My quilting is improving slowly, and I love doing it on my machine. I have come to realise that it doesn't have to be perfect, to look OK! This is the back of the quilt, which was lap size. I have also taken up knitting again.  In March & April, two of my grand-daughters Had baby girls 3 weeks apart.    I hope some of you see this and thanks for dropping by. http://susannasquilts.blogspot.com     ..read more
