10 Years of The Porch
The Blonde Mule
by Kim Baldwin

My pathway to The Porch started in 2016 when they were still teaching out of the Refinery space in Fort-Houston. I was looking for more formal essay training and a friend pointed me to Susannah and this new thing called The Porch. With undergraduate and graduate degrees under my belt, I can confidently say that I didn’t learn how to write until I met Susannah. In the years since, I have taken dozens of classes, performed at their annual live storytelling event, Heartbreak Happy Hour and published many essays. I also now teach at The Porch and am in my second writing group born out of writers ..read more

Those of us who are plus size — which is an estimated 67 percent of us, by the way — know how hard it can be to find clothes. For the Nashville Scene’s annual Style Issue, I wrote about The Plus Closet. Read The Style Issue 2024: Fit City here ..read more

If you’re a person who listens carefully to music, you’ve likely heard Sampha. I discovered him on Solange’s A Seat at the Table and have been hooked ever since. He’s played Brooklyn Bowl on Friday and I spoke to him for the Nashville Scene about his new album, becoming a father and much more. I've loved Jenny Lewis' music for half of my life. I jumped at the chance to write about her show at the Ryman this week for the Nashville Scene. I hope you'll click through to read what I wrote and to see the amazing photos Emily April Allen took of the show, not to be confused with this one that I snapped on my phone. If you know me, then you know how much I love going to author events. The Nashville Scene let me wax poetic about seeing Donna Tartt in 2013, a decade’s worth of Parnassus Books events, the great visiting authors and instructors The Porch brings in, all of the great events The Bookshop hosts, and most recently, Novelette Booksellers getting in on the event game. From my nerdy little heart to yours, hey thanks, bookstore events. Read Hey Thanks, Bookstore Events here ..read more
