In 1995, Nintendo released the Virtual Boy, a video game console billed as providing gamers a unique and immersive playing experience via its stereoscopic red-and-black 3D graphic display. Within a year, following a quickly soured public reception and meager sales, the company would unceremoniously discontinue it. In Japan, Nintendo’s home country, the Virtual Boy lasted just five months.
To this day, the Virtual Boy is remembered as one of the most infamous failures of the video game industry—an industry with plenty of candidates to choose from, mind you. Only 22 games we ..read more

Apple approved the inclusion of game emulators to the App Store earlier this month, but one of the first popular Game Boy emulators has already been removed. Apple tells MacRumors that iGBA appears to be a knockoff, not of Nintendo, but of another emulator. Riley Testut, the developer behind a decade-old Game Boy emulator GBA4IOS, says his app was the one iGBA cloned.
“So apparently Apple approved a knock-off of GBA4iOS — the predecessor to Delta I made in high school — in the App Store,” said Testut on Threads Saturday. “I did not give anyone perm ..read more

The nearly $US700 Limited Edition Steam Deck OLED was released in November 2023 and came with all the improvements found in the normal OLED Deck, but also sported a translucent plastic shell. But this pricier, limited variant seems to be cracking due to overly-tight screws and possible issues with the special plastic used to create its transparent shell.
Since its initial release in 2022, Valve’s portable PC, the Steam Deck, has been a massive success for the company and helped usher in a new era of portable, Switch-like PC devices. In late 2023, to help stay at the top and beat out the new co ..read more

What’s the quote? You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself something something? Discord will implement ads this week. Let’s talk about how it’s going about this, and you may decide for yourself whether that Dark Knight quote applies or not.
Per reporting from The Wall Street Journal and Ars Technica, Discord will start showing users ads this week. The ads are part of its new Sponsored Quests programme. The ads currently aren’t intrusive, but produce a pop up that can be purchased by games publishers as a marketing vector. The pleasant bonus (for now, at least) is that user ..read more

An April Fool’s Day video posted to YouTube by the chat platform Discord wracked up well over a billion page views in less than a single day. The video is only 17 seconds long and jokingly advertises “Loot boxes”—the frequently recurring video game trope—as coming to the chat and streaming app. While you’d think there would be limited interest in that sort of thing, its page views exploded, swiftly growing beyond the margins of popular creators like Mr. Beast.
Since then, viewers online have speculated that Discord may have accidentally created a “viewbotting” mechanism that cou ..read more

So, to start, yes, if you have a Netflix account, you indeed have access to a number of free and surprisingly high-quality mobile games. All of them are free. They don’t have any microtransactions, gameplay timers, or ads. At least for now, none of these titles require any extra upfront payment; instead, you only need to plug in your Netflix username and password. The streamer’s game efforts are so new and oddly ill-defined that the biggest upfront difficulty is actually finding them without looking at the Netflix app itself.
Accessing the games is extremely simple, but the hard part is knowin ..read more

The Backbone One phone controller is getting an update, and this time, it’s compatible with more phone cases.
Backbone One 2nd Generation Lightning and USB-C controllers are out today. The big improvement in this version of the controller is the new magnetic adapters that support more phone cases. With the 1st Generation Backbone One, it was compatible with peel cases and other very thin phone cases. Speaking from personal experience, evenApple’s silicon case was just a hair too bulky for the controller to fit snugly around the phone.
