EN: One of my favourite things about food is how it brings people together. When Hannah and Jimmy started planning their wedding, they knew they wanted to gather all their favourite people for the celebration and serve them all their favourite Montreal foods. Vegetarian samosas and pakora from Pushap. Portuguese chicken from Romados. Haitian griot from Casserole Kréole. Vegan sushi from Ohana. Smoked meat from Schwartz Deli. And most importantly: Bagels from Fairmount Bagel. FR: Une des choses que j’aime le plus de la bouffe, c’est son côté rassembleur. Dès le début de leur planification de m ..read more

EN I step off the busyness of Sainte Catherine Street into a different kind of busyness inside Recyborg. There are electronics scattered around the shop and random parts to repair anything you can imagine. But the energy inside is intentional and structured, not chaotic. The people inside this worker cooperative are focused on repairing broken electronics and audio equipment. As they move around the workspace, you can see that they're each talented at what they do. Their mission? To divert objects and devices of all kinds from landfills in the Greater Montreal area through reuse, recycling or ..read more

As we arrive at the meadow and walk a few steps into the field, the sky opens up and an onslaught of rain quickly forces us to retreat back into the car. It's a small isolated shower, the first of many beautiful summer storms. The sky clears allowing Carly and Zef walk through the meadow together, holding hands and talking together. The beginning of the maternity session is dark and moody: completely void of leaves, the bare trees are a dark chestnut brown; the sky is heavy with an ominous threat of more rain; the tall grass looks red in the melancholy light. In the shelter of some wide trees ..read more

EN: As everyone takes a s ..read more

The trail weaves between thick, humid rainforest and spectacular ocean views. One minute there are large gnarly tree roots crisscrossing the trail, and the next I'm scrambling over large piles of driftwood tossed up on shore by the powerful waves. Up and down, down and up; a prairie kid like me didn't even know a single path could have such variable elevation. Long epic hikes together along rugged coastal trails and a mutual obsession for ultralight hiking gear are the knots that tie Danyelle and Chris together. So it's a little surprise to me when Danyelle and Chris invite ..read more

EN Layer 1 : My glasses. They've always been a part of me, I can't even remember a time when they weren't a layer on my face. I'm very comfortable orienting my vision through the viewfinder of my camera to make photographs. Layer 2 : The covid mask. A relatively new introduction to our lives that prevents any airborne pathogens from infecting people in our community that we care about. Also a constant source of fog to Layer 1 and the viewfinder of my camera, often making it difficult or near impossible to photograph. Layer 3 : The welding shield. A foreign object that up until this photo sess ..read more

EN: A park with tall willows and winding trails that she walks through with her mother. The hospital with the soft yellow brick where they first got the diagnosis. A quiet backyard where they used to sit together, under a gazebo, lush with grapes. The apartment for older people where they both used to live so they could be close to one another. A park along the shore of the Saint Lawrence River where she comes alone to rejuvenate. The CLSC building where she would visit her aunt during her final days. Each of these caregivers provides intimate, long-term support to someone they care about, an ..read more

Ensemble : passionnés de justice sociale, environnementalistes engagés et grands amateurs de sports.  Maddy: incredible, caring, ambitious. Daniel: friendly, brilliant, big-hearted. Together: passionate about social justice, deeply committed to the environment, and huge sports nerds. I love watching Maddy and Dan come together. Alone, they each hold a quiet strength and an unexpected sapience. But when they unite, it’s electrifying. Like the strike of a lightning bolt at the peak of a big storm ..read more

In his suit pocket, there are two small wreaths of myrtle leaves; one for Noah and one for Hannah. The myrtle comes from Noah’s Baba's shrub in Nanaimo, care of Canada Post and a damp paper towel. Myrtle is an evergreen, like the family's wishes for their love. Beyond the circular wreath representing an everlasting love and unity, Ukrainian wedding traditions infused Hannah and Noah's wedding celebration. First the korovai, an old style "wedding cake" that is broken and shared amongst the newly formed community. Next a gift of money, in this case a Canadian toonie, just one dollar each but a ..read more

Location location location. It’s one of the questions I get the most as a portrait photographer. “Where should I do my Montreal portrait session?” My top answer for this question is to plan your photo session in a space that you feel comfortable and enjoy going to. Is it possible to photograph outside your home or in your neighbourhood? Or maybe you have a favourite park or a secret alleyway? Inevitably I end up helping a lot of folks pick the best location for their portrait session. So here it is: my list of best outdoor portrait locations in Montreal. I've included a variety of Montreal nei ..read more
